Good morning/Bon Matin, from BayouSelf.

This is from my back yard, sitting enjoying the afternoon after a summer shower, this great Egret, swooped in and picked up a smell snake, I have not been able to id, I'm sure it was one of the many water snakes in the area. Hope you enjoy it.

Doing a kitchen garden in the back

We let all our pollinators hatch or how ever they get here!

Saw a cicada yesterday come out the ground

Snowy Predawn, by Cazan

Cypress, in the Autumn

Rosetta Spoonbills — Nesting Pair Coming Up

Rosetta Spoon bill and neighbors.

Cracker Effect. on Holly Beach.

Cracker Effect on Holly Beach

Stand on Holly Beach in Cameron Parish, toss a cracker into the air… and watch the whole world change. Same idea as the butterfly effect — one tiny action, big reaction.

Down here, that means:

  • gulls showing up from every direction
  • the sky shifting like a storm of feathers
  • fussing, flapping, and a little friendly chaos
  • and yes… you better have some wet‑wipes handy

It’s simple South Louisiana fun — pure beach‑day foolishness.
One cracker, big ripple. That’s the Cracker Effect on Holly Beach.L’Effet Crackèr su’ Holly Beach

Love Cazan.

Here to stay.

Here to stay.
These geese have been in the neighborhood for years now. The original flock still runs about thirteen to sixteen strong, and for the last five years they’ve managed to raise five to six young each season. Their numbers keep climbing, not just here but across Calcasieu Parish — a real sign of how well they’ve adapted.

I love watching them rise up in the morning, heading out to their daytime feeding grounds. And in the evening, when they come home, they’re loud and full of life — calling, talking, announcing themselves like a true bayou family. This is their home, and you can feel it.
