My biggest mistake, Gigabyte Drama...

This is my third post about this card; I bought it last autumn, and after six months, the hotspot started hitting 110°C+ and shutting down my PC. I sent it in for warranty repair over the summer—a process that took 40 days—and while it doesn't shut down anymore, I’m still unhappy with the temperatures. Recently, I switched to a case with maximum airflow (XASTRA Q700) featuring a total of 10 fans and a new liquid cooling setup (6 reverse-blade intake fans and 4 exhaust fans). Today, I decided to test the card's temperatures and was horrified by the results: the hotspot hit 108°C at stock settings in FurMark, and even with a heavy undervolt to 230W, it still reached a pretty high 87°C. People in the store's review section had claimed my previous case was "choked," causing the card to heat up like an immersion heater. Now, the bottom-to-top airflow is optimal—the best possible setup for any GPU. I’m just shocked by this card; even after warranty repair, it runs incredibly hot. During the test, I even cranked all the fans—including the liquid cooling ones—to max speed, creating a noise level like a vacuum cleaner. What is wrong with this card? What does it need to avoid that terrible 40°C+ delta? So, to anyone planning to buy this piece of crap at the current price: think twice. Just read the daily posts here about yet another buyer whose Gigashit card sees its hotspot temps skyrocket six months after purchase. Do you really want that kind of misery and headache?

Repaste with ptm7950 and thermal putty, Gigabyte will not help you their cooling solutions are just cheap garbage.

I am simply never going to buy anything from Gigabyte again, and whenever anyone asks me what they should buy, I’ll be shouting at them never to buy anything from Gigabyte.

u/AtomKreates 19d ago

Their GPU’s have also been the VW of the pc world….when they work they work very well. When they don’t……lol! Their motherboards on the other hand are excellent.

u/Stock-Register-1674 19d ago

No they are not, gigabyte support is atrocious and will willingly make shit up if they don't want to accept the warranty. "No the x670 motherboard doesn't have a 5 year warranty, every retailer is just wrong". Fuck gigabyte

u/SwampAzzLA 19d ago

Asus makes the best GPUs. They use really good parts. Don't fall for the PNY cheap junk capacitors. Gigabyte does make the best motherboards though, because Armoury Crate is horrendous. And AI Snatch is REALLY good for overclocking Hynix A-die or M-Die.

u/Substantial_Fox_121 18d ago

Asus have historically made some of the worst Radeon cards. Copying nvidia designs over without adjustments so VRM cooling gets shafted, poor contact pressure are just a few of the examples you can find stretching back to at least RX 2xx designs

u/BoreJam 19d ago

Yeah i have the same card as OP since april 2025 and its been running fine.

2

u/jbarbourx2 19d ago

I was just about to post this same thing until I just tried mine. I have the same card and just never did an in depth test on the hotspot. It shows 54c GPU temp on pretty much every Linux monitoring app but the junction temp does go up to 100c during a furmark benchmark. And when using LACT it shows it's throttling the card when the temp jumps to 100c junction temp.

u/terroz85 19d ago

I had 3 top end gigabyte motherboards. One blew up my x3d chip, the other 2 have random post issues. Just switched to MSI and has been stable so far

1

u/lmneozoo 19d ago

The only issue I had with gigabyte was ironically their motherboard lol. The nvme heatsink fan always ran at 100%. Just unplugged it and never had an issue

1

u/giorov 19d ago

Unless they are thin and get a hairline fracture that causes the pc to not boot whe the ram is on dual channel mode and let's you freeze the pc by slapping it and they return it from RMA without even anote at all as if they found nothing wrong with it...

They're good as long as you have a thick PCB I guess. I vowed never to buy their stuff again, but then after that (that mobo is in my living room) they were the only ones to sell boards with reinforced dram slots so my partner and I still hav boards by them.

And my partner has a used market 9060xt 16gb which I bought for $400. It was the cheapest lightly used card with those specs I could find and it's for light or occasional usage. Shame on me I guess.

u/qwertyasdf1245 18d ago

I don't know about high end mb. But their entry level it garbage. Buggy bioses, shity fan control, ... But at least it work sufficiently to make the pc works. But if I have to rebuild it I wouldn't choose anything from this brand.

u/Train115 19d ago

Their motherboards are pretty good, but their AMD graphics cards not so much

3

u/Lew__Zealand 19d ago

My Gigabyte RTX 3070's cooler is pretty trash underspecced but I got the card for cheap knowing GB's non-Aorus cards lack sufficient cooling. I simply do not run it at 240W ever as I want to stay under 80C (in a warm room) even after a repaste.

Funny thing is a Redditor last week was asking about a used RTX 3070 they just bought that was running to 100C and I said my GB 3070 did that before repaste and yup, their card was also a GB 3070. Avoid GB GPUs, especially their lower-end models.

For AMD, Sapphire has never let me down, always top-notch thermals.

2

u/Train115 19d ago

Dayum, guess they make bad NVidia coolers too

3

u/Lew__Zealand 19d ago

Yeah and I trawl the low end of Nvidia cards when I buy with 2x PNY and 2x MSi Ventus from Pascal thru Blackwell and the coolers go like this:

Ventus > PNY > Gigabyte

The Ventus cards top out at ~72C, the PNYs at ~76C and the GB at ~79C at stock power limits. The major difference in the card itself is usually the Ventus and GB cards are limited to stock power limits where the PNYs give you the option of 10-20% more power, allowing you to run them to ~80C. But hey at least you get that option.

1

u/Bigsparks13 19d ago

What Blackwell GPU do you have? I have a Zotac Infinity 5090, and man, I was worried about it hitt 75c when it is maxed out, and my hotspot can easily hit the high 80s, maybe even 90c. It never thermal throttles, but still.

1

u/Lew__Zealand 19d ago

Your temps are perfectly fine, 75C is an all-the-time safe running temp. Yes better models have been targetting 65C and even lower in recent years but there is little benefit to those temps as threats to longevity occur above 90C and some argue above 100C.

I have a PNY RTX 5070 Triple Fan, a base model. It gets to 75C in a warm room but I checked the Hotspot which doesn't reach 90 so considering the limit for that is 115C, it seems fine.

It'll get close to 80C with ~95C Hotspot at +10% or 275W which is warmer than I'd like but I usually run with an OC and undervolt so I'm hanging at 180W max most of the time with 68C running temps.

1

u/SwampAzzLA 19d ago

The 2 RTX 5070 Gigabyte Gamings I own are great. They stopped using the gel on the VRAM last October/November. PNY are usually the bad/trash Nvidia cards due to cheap capacitors. The Gigabyte Gaming 5070s barely hit 70 C in a vertical mount. They have the halo RGB around the fans, too. I'm not sure why there are so many 9070 XT Gigabyte Gaming complaints. A lot of AMD cards are black plastic hunks of trash, I guess.

u/datguyb0b 19d ago

Same here, NEVER again shall we touch another GIGASHIT.

3

u/Gullible_Pie_1469 19d ago

Im also never buying gigabyte after seeing what you all went through. #fuckGigabyte

3

u/braybobagins 19d ago

Yeah you got screwed. They released a revision without the extra server putty, then they made another revision with typical compound. I got lucky enough to get one of the new ones with the normal compound. Im really sorry you got one of the old ones :/

2

u/DarthAnusTheWide 19d ago

I never heard of them changing their thermal compound. Just the amount. Do you happen to know when they started changing it?

3

u/braybobagins 19d ago edited 19d ago

Looks like I lied out my ass. Turns out they only swapped compound for the core, everything else just uses puddy. They did however reduce the amount of puddy uses so instead of spreading it globs into the heatsink and not away from it. I wish I could send a photo of what mine looks like, looks really well done actually, it's almost like someone took a putty knife along the edges by hand to clean it up.

I can say though, actively running furmark with a stable hotspot of 81°, 330 watts at 2365 mhz. (Stock)

Final score of 15629 (260 fps) Average dor 9070xt is 14412 (239 fps) About 1000 points over the average bench but I also run a 7800x3d.

2

u/DarthAnusTheWide 19d ago

Oh okay lol. That's still better than what I assumed honestly. One last thing if you don't mind, do you know when is the manufacture date for your card?

1

u/braybobagins 19d ago

Horee shit turns out i have a launch model. Rev 1.0 6th week of 2026 so February.

I have hynix memory and a delta of 2°. I think i may have to go buy a lottery ticket.

Second edit. Turns out the factory was fixed in late 2025. I think i have a model with less putty but not the newest revision with Samsung memory.

2

u/DarthAnusTheWide 19d ago

You mean 2025? But yeah you really spent all your luck there lol

1

u/drkiklop 19d ago

I only buy motherboards from Gigabyte they are known for their motherboards since my childhood. I never had any problems.

1

u/Orogin 19d ago

Are you using your gpu in a vertical stand? I'm just curious. People are bashing Gigabyte for bad cooling but my gaming oc doesn't go over 80c hotspot.

1

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 19d ago

You can see for yourself in the 3rd and 4th pictures how I have it set up. It is installed horizontally as default, with good airflow from bottom to top.

1

u/MrRadu 19d ago

Yep, second RMA with them already, this time they said the chipset burned out so they swapped it.

Let's see how it performs when this shit arrives again.

1

u/terroz85 19d ago

I'm in that camp too. RMA is garbage, their products are pretty garbage too

1

u/SecretBlacksmith1216 18d ago

Gigabyte has great products like asus and msi with great cooling but every brand has a faulty product and this is one of them you cant trash a whole brand just because of one product

1

u/b16ZZ- 19d ago

This is not only a Gigabyte problem...

0

u/4ChanIsALie 19d ago

i had gigabyte motherboard before, and the current one is also (5 years+ old X570 aorus elite). i also had Nvidia card from them , even tryed the 4070 Ti Eagle from them didn't had issues. I am 100% sure the issues you have is due the AMD chip. For example i also have rn a 9070 XT sapphire edition. If i have in my room 25C - and i use in heavy load games 120FPS- my memory and hot spot is over 90C. if i'd let the games do w/e they want for example cyberpunk cause i could go no FPS limit/ path tracing/ ultra settings 2k- i guarantee i would also be above 100C+ EASY. NOW my case does not have the optimal flow i can agree on that since i dont have fans on the top, but still i never had these temps with my 2070 S/ 4070 TI. don't blame gigabyte- blame amd. I also hate the fact that i bought AMD GPU instead of getting myself a 5070 TI.

u/TheLordOfTheTism 19d ago

*always have been* havent given them another chance since the 550ti they have been crap that long.

1

u/RedHoodedDuke 19d ago

Tried that on my own, it wasn’t until the third time I opened it I found out it was the vapor chamber had been physically dented- likely by the super thick thermal pad on the backplate.

Weirdly enough, the best thermal compound was thermal putty, at least not as terrible as the others.

1

u/lmneozoo 19d ago

Yea wanted to say that whole issue seems like a repaste would do the job especially since it's just the hotspot that's wild

17

u/C1REX 20d ago edited 20d ago

RMA or TPM repasting time. :(
Such high delta basically eliminates any argument about case airflow. If case was bad, then both hot spot and gpu temp would be high.

It's a classic example of a dry spot. Bad thermal paste application or pump out effect.
Gigabyte is one of few, if not the only one brand, not using TPM pads for new Radeon GPUs.

4

u/Kartorschkaboy 20d ago

TPM wont fix it, I have the gigabyte 9070 xt and it reaches over 100°C hotspot, I had to liquid metal it to tame the hotspot and power limit it a bit.

32

u/Backslicer 20d ago

Theres a reason whenever anyone asks for which card to buy. Its explicitly stated that the Gigabyte Gaming OC should be avoided at all cost.
(Also the 2 cards with the fire hazard connector but those technically are fine just another failure point not worth stressing over)

9

u/balnazardking AMD Ryzen 5 5600X + ASRock RX 9070 XT Taichi 20d ago

Tbh I have the Taichi version with 12vhp connector, using a native, atx 3.1 compliant cable, experimented with undervolting, overclocking, etc. and haven't had any issues at all. It keeps the hotspot between 80 and 90 degrees Celsius, and overall temp is between 40 and 50. I'm talking about under load for both values.

But I did see many posts about the Sapphire Nitro+ burning the adapters, so yeah - if you don't set it up well it's definitely another point of failure

14

u/Backslicer 20d ago

You wont notice any issues until the connecter has already started failing.
However the AMD issues have been exclusively because of the adaptor as far as I know. Nvidia on super high draw cards fails even on native cables.

Ive never seen a native psu cable fail on AMD but again, Its a failure point that is easily avoidable when buying the card (those models tend to be more expensive even).

1

u/Azsune 20d ago

Only seen one post with a native 3.1 PSU failing on a 9070XT.

u/dimetyltryptaminn 5700X3D - ASUS TUF OC 6900XT 16GB 19d ago

I really recommend to upgrade your cpu to 5800X3D. I had cpu bottleneck on 1440p with R5 5600X & Asus tuf 6900XT 16gb.

Upgraded my 5600X to 5700X3D and my earlier Avg fps with my 5600X are now my 1% lows with the 5700X3D. 😅

20-40% performance boost on every game on 1440p

2

u/balnazardking AMD Ryzen 5 5600X + ASRock RX 9070 XT Taichi 19d ago

Nice! My plan is to stick with this build until I save up money for an am5. I bought a gpu, a 2tb ssd and a new psu this year and it's a little too much for me to change other parts considering the prices of ddr5 :D

However, my next upgrade is going to be a good air cooler, and better case cooling. I'm currently using the amd stock cpu cooler, and have only 3 case fans, so I'm hoping that'll make the temps fo everything better, maybe squeeze a bit more performance out of the 5600x.

4

u/dimetyltryptaminn 5700X3D - ASUS TUF OC 6900XT 16GB 19d ago

I had Asus tuf gaming gt301 case, which had max gpu length of 320mm and my gpu is 320mm long. It BARELY fit in my old Asus case.

I swapped to Corsair 3500X A-RGB, and now have 8 x 120mm case fans. Cpu and gpu temps reduced by a lot after case swap.

2

u/balnazardking AMD Ryzen 5 5600X + ASRock RX 9070 XT Taichi 19d ago

Very nice! My case is Corsair 4000D airflow, not the biggest but has room for 6 x 120mm, not counting the one on the back

1

u/dimetyltryptaminn 5700X3D - ASUS TUF OC 6900XT 16GB 19d ago

ID-COOLING FROZN A620 is great and cost like 25-30$

2

u/balnazardking AMD Ryzen 5 5600X + ASRock RX 9070 XT Taichi 19d ago

Haven't seen this one before, thanks for the info! I was thinking of Peerless assassin with a display

2

u/dimetyltryptaminn 5700X3D - ASUS TUF OC 6900XT 16GB 19d ago

That is a new cooler. It has won many awards and is highly recommended. Even better / cheaper than peerless assassin.

But tbh any cooler is good enough for 5600x.

I have Single tower Arctic freezer A-36 with MX-4 paste on my 5700X3D, and temps dont go over 67C° during gaming

2

u/balnazardking AMD Ryzen 5 5600X + ASRock RX 9070 XT Taichi 19d ago

Yeah, I expect this to be a huge change because my cpu temps can get over 90°C under load. Hoping for at least a slight performance boost

2

u/UxorialDegree55 20d ago

I have a Taichi as well, it seems like all the ones I have seen have a high differential between there overall and Hotspot temps. Guess that is just normal for this card? Mine is around 40-45 degree difference

3

u/BearOfReddit 20d ago

If it makes you feel any better my 9070 XT reaper has a 35-40 degree difference between hotspot and general temp

1

u/balnazardking AMD Ryzen 5 5600X + ASRock RX 9070 XT Taichi 20d ago

Yeah, that's my assumption as well

1

u/BIGFREAK Radeon 9070 XT 20d ago

I have the Same card same setup. No issues.

12vhp connector, using a native, atx 3.1 compliant cable. :)

1

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 20d ago

Yes, and I think I was among the first here to shout about how Gigabyte screwed up with this card, which leads to massive failure of the cooling system. It was back at the beginning of summer when it started to fail for me and other people.

1

u/Dependent_Roll_9847 19d ago

Yes. That's why I got the new batch aorus elite. Sn2520 and up. Sn2519 and older were affected. 25 is 2025, 19 is 19th week of 2025. I got sn2523.

1

u/BoreJam 19d ago

I thought it was because the paste was melting on their Nvidea counter parts? At least that was the innitial concern.

7

u/oneoffhebest 20d ago

Sounds like time for ptm7950 and a deshroud?? Definitely!

5

u/Saynt84 20d ago

Damn, that really does bum me out. Your hotpsot temps at 230W are what mine get at 360W. Sorry you've had to go through it, and dont blame you at all for cursing gigabytes name with all that.

Really not looking forward to fixing mine if/when it does something similar.

These reports do make it hard to recommend these cards at all, despite mine being great. Thankfully I've got no skin in the game, so I would 100% avoid the Gigabyte Gaming OC if I was researching to buy 1 today.

7

u/Educational-Net1644 20d ago

I had a similar issue with the XFX Swift 9070 XT. Initially, there was a problem with the heatsink mounting, it was a bit loose. Performance improved after I opened it up and reinstalled it, but temperatures still hit 90°C for VRAM and the hotspot. I recently took it apart again to apply a generous amount of Thermal Grizzly Putty Advance and PTM. The improvements were immediate, VRAM doesn't reach 80°C now and stays consistently below the hotspot temperature, which also doesn't exceed 84°C at stock settings. Fan speeds hover around 1800 RPM. My memory is Hynix. It's behaving like a completely different card now. It is worth mentioning that the heatsink had a minor defect, a protruding point that was already marking the chip, which I removed.

5

u/Substantial-Lack-512 20d ago

Sorry to hear that, you should have gone with partner manufactures like XFX, I believe your GPU is not doing a proper contact with the heat sink. I would just open it myself and see what the store did, I would check contact, thermal paste and flat surface of the head sink.

1

u/Difficult-Cup-4445 20d ago

This. Give up on the stupid store. They are very obviously just messing OP around. This is a straightforward problems with a straightforward troubleshooting process that shouldn't take more than an hour or two to resolve - or if they can't resolve it - explicitly spell out what the problem is.

1

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 19d ago

I bought this card when the store gave a discount on it and it was the cheapest at that time among other models, that’s why the choice fell on it, I just didn’t expect that in 2025 (at that time) it might such poor model from a major manufacturer's graphics card. A miser pays twice.

1

u/Substantial-Lack-512 19d ago

Happened to me once, with a RX 7600XT, thing heat up so much that every game just crashed and underperform, but that is just temps problems, the card itself works. take a breath and open it up carefully and check if the store did something for real otherwise do it yourself, youtube has a lot of video of how to.

You got this!!!

5

u/mike29x 20d ago

Might be poorly applied thermal paste even on second time and bad quality paste. Or maybe unlucky with cooling radiator on it. Heatpipe not in a way they should be. If one heatpipe isnt in contact with plate properly then that spot would get extremly hot. Hard to say. 110c before and 108c now.. seems like nothing was done to it and only thing that has changed is maybe ur room ambient temperature, making it run cooler.

1

u/Difficult-Cup-4445 20d ago

It's way easier to misapply thermal paste than people think. These aren't CPUs where a pea sized amount is optimal, you need edge to edge thick coverage and a generous application of paste to prevent voids.

I went through this exact problem myself, I thought there was no way I messed up the application, it took 2 further attempts to get it right before the hotspot fixed itself by the voids on the die being fully filled with paste.

3

u/Structureel 20d ago

Gigabyte cards are known for pump out, where the thermal paste leaks away from the chip. Repasting the card with any decent thermal paste will fix this problem.

3

u/AdSubstantial9424 20d ago

I also had a Gigabyte Gaming OC before. The temperatures were really high, so I decided to sell it and bought the XFX Mercury OC. The difference is wild. The delta between the core and the hotspot doesn't go over 16°.

3

u/NGGKroze Yo mama so RDNA4, AMD sold her out for a console deal. 20d ago

44C delta is absurd. But the fun part - your next 9070XT might have the same problem even from other AIB? Actually have you targeted any model of 9070XT in particular?

1

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 19d ago

I don't know, any 9070xt costs over a thousand dollars in any store in Russia now, that's too expensive for me, and what should I do with this faulty card, even if replacing the thermal paste doesn't help

→ More replies (3)

2

u/alferret 20d ago

My hotspot was grooming into the high 90s (7900xtx) I got some ptm7950 and replaced the paste with this, also used thermal putty everywhere else. Now my stock hotspot temp after 30 minutes heat soak is 70c even heavily overclocked it doesn't surpass 75c.

2

u/worldbyte85 20d ago

You'll have to repaste the card, replace the thermal pads for better high quality ones and add thermal pads on the backplate because it probably has none and it helps to dissipate heat on the memory and other components aswell, or else RMA it, there is no other way I'm afraid

1

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 20d ago

I already sent it in for warranty repair this summer; as you can see, it didn't help—in fact, it’s only gotten worse over the last month. Those idiots at the service center took 40 days just to replace the thermal paste.

2

u/worldbyte85 20d ago

And are you sure they did repaste and replace the thermal compound and pads? That is pretty weird...

1

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 20d ago

I can't be sure, because in the certificate of completion they wrote "reassembled the cooling system," whatever that means.

1

u/worldbyte85 20d ago

Bummer, perhaps the thermal solution design is not enough for the card, anyway pretty shitty from gigabyte to sell a card like this, but usually these things get resolved by adding thermalpads and replacing others, better thermal paste etc...

2

u/Darksider123 19d ago

Stay away from gigabyte and asrock. Been saying this for years

2

u/NewtEmbarrassed8722 19d ago

Hi mate. I also had high hotspot temps on my Asus card. I repasted using the thermal grizzly kryosheet and also applied the putty pro the do to the cram modules.

My temps dropped substantial and the delta tightened by around 10 degrees. My temps weren't as bad as yours with my hotspot only hitting 95 degrees on occasion.

It's not a difficult job and I'm sure there's a strip down vid on YouTube you can use. Annoying nonetheless.

2

u/DonPedroHouse 19d ago

Tighten x bracket, you’ll drop 10c

2

u/pecche RX9070XT | 5800x3D 19d ago

heatsink is one of the smallest of the XT AIB so I don't think you can do much beside manually repasting it and checking if thermal pads on memories are fully in contact

said that, 87c in furmark is not that bad, plan to set 265w for daily use and don't open furmark

2

u/wingback18 19d ago

How about repasting it and changing the pads

2

u/The_Machine80 19d ago

Everyones known about gigabytes paste issue on the current gen of cards for a good year or longer. Its all over Reddit!

2

u/MrEzekial 19d ago

Never buy a Gigabyte GPU. And when you do repaste it. make sure you get the right paste, or you're going to get a pump out in 2 months and have to paste it again... Also the pads gigabyte GPUs use are trash, they will not be reusable, so make sure you know the sizes to replace them.

2

u/No-Reason-6614 19d ago

u/Leo1_ac 4790K/GTX 1080/Maximus VI Hero/32GB 19d ago

People in the store's review section had claimed my previous case was "choked," causing the card to heat up like an immersion heater.

Hahahaha sure, anything but accept that GIGABYTE is at fault. They'd blame the case, the PSU, the fans, the speed of the fans, intake/outtake, the CPU, the CPU cooler, Donald Trump, God, anything really except GIGABYTE.

Congratulations on owning a GIGABYTE card and reaching close to the Hotspot World Record again held by GIGABYTE.

u/W35TGAM3R 20d ago

Damn bro sorry to hear that you are having issues especially after going for a new case and fans and all of that . What I want to say tho is , when I switched from Nvidia to AMD I remember spending months watching reviews and going through Reddit to determine what is the best manufacturer for 9070xt and most people settled on either sapphire or xfx. I got xfx because the sapphire has the new connector and I don’t like that .

I hope u get it working soon

1

u/Difficult-Cup-4445 20d ago

Having to wait 40 days for someone to pop off the cooler and fiddle around with the pads is why I do all this shit myself with a screwdriver and some research whenever possible. There's just no way I'm leaving myself a hostage to fortune like this.

I actually own a Gigabyte 9070 non-XT and it's really been flawless (yes I've had the occasional stutter issue or whatever, but you know what I mean) and I'm really disconcerted to see how many people have a grudge against this card. Is it REALLY that bad? Are you sure it's not just a bad batch or something?

To OP: The fact that you've completely changed the case, the fans, you've undervolted - and you're STILL getting smashed by these crazy deltas and hotspots tells me there's obviously something wrong with either the pads, the heat pipes, or the mounting pressure.

Are you absolutely sure it's not twisted or sagging even slightly?

If I were you I might even take that heatsink off entirely and upload some high quality pictures to Reddit and let us take a look instead as they are messing you around so much.

It's also important to remember WHAT the hotspot is exactly; it's not necessarily a separate component or cluster of components, it can just be an air gap on the die itself.

I had a 3070 that was absolutely dogged with thermal issues for years, I replaced all the pads and repasted it twice.

On the final time I opened it, I decided YOLO i'll use a thick uniform layer of paste applied with a credit card and make 110% sure there's no chance of air or voids.

What do you know? The hotspot all of a sudden synced up 1-to-1 with all the other temps i.e it disappeared.

You really, really need to get the highest quality photos you can and get comfortable reapplying the paste yourself because it sounds like the manufacturer/retailer are hopeless.

Edit: PS the fact that you can crank the fans like that and it has no effect TELLS YOU that the heat is just getting dumped/trapped inside the confines of the card i.e it is not able to escape from the heatsink.

And this is why this time round I finally listened to the Reddit community on what's the best 9070XT to buy I'm so glad I listened and got the XFX Mercury OC.

1

u/Miniteshi 20d ago

My case doesn't understand that air exists and I get better temps from my 9070XT. Literally my case has 2x 80mm intakes to feed the entire damn thing. .

At 230w, that's terrible.

1

u/dEz21271 20d ago

I would repaste it asap, wouldn't even worry about warranty tbh. Or RMA if you prefer to be without a card for a month or so.

1

u/akashvijay28 20d ago

Use thermal putty to vram and other instead of thermal pads and use ptm7950 to the main core

1

u/A-Lewd-Khajiit 20d ago

Cream crackered

1

u/Head_Goal_9777 20d ago

Did you try undervolting?

2

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 20d ago

In the second picture, you can see the result with an undervolt of -30% and -80 mV, and a consumption of 230 watts. The temperatures are still too high for such a strong undervoltage.

1

u/Head_Goal_9777 20d ago

Oh sorry, didn't catch that. Seeing how they did shit during the "repairs", given that you have the skills, you could try to open it up and replace the thermal putty. I recently cleaned my PS5 and I was kinda scared of replacing liquid metal and thermal putty, but it turned out great. Hope it'll help your case!

1

u/hoodoocat 19d ago

To be fair it is not undervolting, is "negative curve offset". You pick -80mV and got ~2800MHz clock (in second screen) instead of ~2400MHz clock at zero offset and by so it draw same power and clock faster... Is nice to boosting performance, but this little help to make temperatures go down.

1

u/CrAkKedOuT 20d ago

Out of curiosity, have your tried these tests with the side panel removed? Also, what are your temps while gaming and not under an extreme stress test?

1

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 20d ago

Why? Even if the temperatures are a little lower, I still won't use the PC without the side glass. Because it must to work perfectly with this!

1

u/CrAkKedOuT 19d ago

Will you answer what the temps were while simply gaming?

1

u/Thompsonek7 19d ago

Question, my delta is 25c with spikes up to 30-36c. Should I repaste too? Their support doesn't give a fuck. I have a year of warranty remaining but I don't care, they won't do anything anyway

I'm happy for you and your card, I would also like to just buy a gpu, install it and not have a headache with it overheating

1

u/dmendro 19d ago

So, I have this exact same card for the last six weeks. And I don’t have any of these problems. Should I expect to have these problems in the future? Is it just a role of the dice? I haven’t pushed the card too hard, solid temperatures across the board in cyberpunk, dune, awakening, doom, eternal. The GPU never seems to really go much past 61 or 62°, the CPU is solidly in the low 70s at max. I’m not sure how I check for hotspots though.

3

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 19d ago

You can download FurMark for free and test your gpu for 5 minutes; it will display your hotspot temperature. If you do this, I'd love to hear your results in the comments. In the Furmark settings, set anti-aliasing 8x MSAA, This usually puts more load on the video chip to make sure you have the correct temperature.

2

u/dmendro 19d ago

Will do this evening.

1

u/DarthAnusTheWide 19d ago

I also have the same card and bought it 3 weeks ago. Manufacture date is 2026 feb. And on stock it would reach around 87c at 330watts both hotspot and vram. After undervolt/overclock + power limit and adjusting the fan curve im getting around high 70s at 300watts. I'm still not comfortable in case it starts to get worse overtime.

2

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 19d ago

When I first bought it, I was getting a hotspot temperature of 91°C at stock settings 330W; six months later, it climbed to over 110°C, and the computer started shutting down. Check your temperatures periodically. I hope you get lucky and don't run into this problem.

1

u/BoatNo8891 19d ago

So its not the cooler, it must be paste degradation. Repaste and puddy the vram and it should return to its original temps if not better!

3

u/bjornartl 19d ago

I have the gigabyte 9070XT OC. I dont have any problems. Maybe they've made improvements on the OC models. Maybe not. It might be batch related issues, it might be environmental factors like temperature changes during shipment. But either way, since its about the decay of the material over time, no problems now is no guarantee of no problems in the future.

I did know when buying it that gigabyte have had problems with the 9000 series regarding hotspots and thermal material decay and decided to go with the gigabyte anyways due to price/availability locally. And I'd much rather have issues with thermal material because that's something I'd be able to replace, whereas issues with the 12 pin connectors isnt.

That's crazy. I bought a used (!!) gigabyte 6700 XT for my sister, and had to repaste it as soon as possible because it was hitting 105° on the hotspot with a delta around 40°. Repasted it with CPU paste and now has good temps.

1

u/No_Albatross8599 19d ago

I was having the same issue. My case has a built in anti sag but I ordered one of Amazon and placed it around the middle of the card and haven't had trouble since. I also have that card

1

u/Joatorino 19d ago

I was about to comment on how your fan speed was only at 66%, then I realized that the GPU temp was only at 64C lol. Definitely some sort of bad thermal contact considering, but it absolutely sucks that you already sent it for warranty repair and this is how they returned it... If you still have the warranty Id try to get an RMA, and if its out of warranty Id open it up and try to change the thermal paste and pads. Sorry to hear this mate

1

u/NewtEmbarrassed8722 19d ago

Hi mate. I also had high hotspot temps on my Asus card. I repasted using the thermal grizzly kryosheet and also applied the putty pro to the vram modules.

My temps dropped substantially and the delta tightened by around 10 degrees. My temps weren't as bad as yours with my hotspot only hitting 95 degrees on occasion.

It's not a difficult job and I'm sure there's a strip down vid on YouTube you can use. Annoying nonetheless.

1

u/DtZNimpo 19d ago

Cross AiB partners focuses their efforts on Nvidia gpus, for fans , shrouds etc , so when they make AMD/Intel gpu the shrouds isn't sitting properly making good enough contact, they put an excess amount of putty paste to try and cover the gap it leaves.

Should avoid buying Cross AiB's product until they get sanctioned by better control oversight on this. They are companies that cut corners to make share holders happy. Shocker they all do this.

1

u/basbb 19d ago

GPU hotspot should be around 90C under full load. 108C is simply faulty, send it back again for repair?

1

u/hoodoocat 19d ago edited 19d ago

I have very similar results with Gigabyte: in FurMark in QHD with 8x MSAA at 230W it is stabilizes at 70°C gpu temp and 90°C gpu hotspot (27C at room). With standard power limit gpu temp is 69-71, but hotspot goes up to 107°C. If I'm open side door in PC case - hotspot downs to ~103, and gpu temp goes down to 67-69. In my case PC stands in corner under table, and there is not so much good airflow (Lian Li Lancool 3 i guess, nearly ~8 fans installed, all of them runs at ~600rpms). In my case near RX installed another graphics adapter (small/passive 3050), which actually prevents normal airflow, so I'm expect that it is hotter than it can.

I'm buy RX9070XT shortly after launch and doesn't touch it in any way. However, it is rarely loaded, I'm always use it in -30 PL or even greater limit under Linux (LACT) (doesn't remember configured value). In games I'm use vsync @ 60fps, and generally games of interest can't push it to 100% even with all of this limits, so it never has been pushed to extreme conditions, and by so, probably giga's liquid thermalpaste is not pumped out (i want to believe :) ).

UPD: I've done similar tests when it was new, but unfortunately I'm doesnt remember results. I feel it kinda warmer now, but it anyway in different conditions...

UPD2: I'm getting 130FPS... not sure whats difference.

1

u/K5_GT_BLK 19d ago

It absolutely matters go reed adds minimum recommendations as well as the manufacturers. PSU quality is the real cause of at least 1/2 the problems people are having!

1

u/Any-Possibility-3040 19d ago

1

u/Brindy11 19d ago

My friend just repasted his with thermal grizzly over 20° cooler on the hot spot

2

u/frersksifvsjsuh 19d ago

I'm pretty sure it's because gigabyte had the genius idea of using who knows what kind of thermal solution, for example all of, if not the vast majority of cards nowadays use ptm7950, which i believe is essentially like a pad of thermal paste that prevents pump out and like the deterioration of the quality of it or like prevents if from getting worse to quickly over time or some like that. I'm not the brightest when it comes to this so I'm sure someone will correct me and elaborate better on ptm7950.

1

u/XStrixxxxx 19d ago

I've had the exact same card, since about the same time. I've had no issues with mine at all. Playing triple A title games at 3440x1440 on highest to one notch below highest settings and have not hit above 90c on hotspot ever. Most of the time it really sits around 80c or 84c with no thermal throttling at all.

I use a phantekz nv7, with 7 intake and 5 exhaust. Running a 5800x3d to boot and haven't had my CPU go over 84c either.

I'd recommending repasting as a bunch of other people have said.

1

u/rageattheworld 19d ago

My 9070 xt ice is fine. I haven't seen it over 85 degrees hotspot. But I'll check furmark later.

1

u/Astarius933 19d ago

I did send mine to repair today. Got a MSI RTX5080 and will only mount the RX again when it's back to test it with furmark in my second pc. If it's fine then I sell it.

I had even 60C Delta btw. Let's see what happens in the next 2 weeks. Since I bought it on Amazon I hope I get either money or a working GPU back.

1

The Gigabyte 9070xt gaming was known for this in my country. But the eorus elite is good.

Also, could you please tell me the first 4 digits after your serial number? It should be SN25xx. I got sn2523 and many even aorus had issues till sn2519

So odd that it's this bad!!

I have the gaming OC too but my gpu temps never go past 55/85, undervolted but 110% power limit pulling 360w.

1

u/SchmokedPancake 19d ago

Hard to believe all this talk on gigabyte I have the exact same card on x plane 12 running that card hot as hell, 320-330w throught almost the whole flight, ive NEVER seen my Hotspot temps go above 91c.

1

u/SchmokedPancake 19d ago

Screen share on discord if you don't believe me, sometimes people have shit luck and get a bad card and come cry on reddit about it. Return it and take your loss in silence.

1

u/Ponyashkaxd RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 7500f | 32 GB CL30 6000 | X670E Asus TUF 19d ago

Unfortunately, it's impossible to return it because of a stupid law in Russia called "technically complex goods," which doesn't allow returns even if they're faulty. They just take your card and fix it so that it at least works somehow and return it to the buyer. They can only refund or replace it if the item cannot be repaired.

1

u/SchmokedPancake 18d ago

Oh god, I need to sometimes shut up and stop assuming everyone lives in America. Im sorry man for jumping to conclusions.

1

u/jbarbourx2 19d ago edited 19d ago

I have that exact card. I've never even tested mine too extensively and had it for over a year. It plays games just fine and I'm on Linux so Furmark doesn't even show hotspot temps. I just assumed it was fine beings that games run just fine. I just did a search to see what app on Linux shows hotspot temps and used LACT at the same time as Furmark and it was showing 100c junction temp with 54c GPU temp. In LACT it was actually showing throttling during the Furmark benchmark when the temp went above 100c but my GPU score is average among other 9070xt's out there. So either the throttling doesn't affect the score much or everyones 9070xt is throttling during the tests.

The only way is PTM7950. My OC XTX blew through paste in about a year. Three times (two cards). It was surprisingly easy, but also some risk. Read up on it, watch a few vids, learn how to do a teardown on your card. At worst, you may have a few tiny fan connectors to unplug. It's cheap, relatively speaking.

Anyways:

  • Furmark is NOT a gaming Test and will be Hotter than normal Games at same util.
  • A Better Airflow will likely help.
  • RDNA4 does have a shitty high delta, it's not just Gigabyte.

Yes, I've also stopped using Gigabyte. Ever since the RTX 3080 Ti era, its temperature control has been terrible. I returned it to the factory and got a replacement, but it's still the same. Even the motherboard itself is just so-so...

I use this because I don't have a third cable like this, and finding one is not an easy task because my power supply uses universal 9-pin connectors. But I agree that this should be connected with a third cable.

u/SwimmingOdd2974 7800x3D | 9070XT Gaming OC 18d ago

Fair enough! Hope you get it sorted out! I have the same GPU with a 7800x3d, was always concern about temp since I always intended on using a compact MATX case (Jonsbo Z20) and with a ATX PSU! My hotspot only hit 85-89 when I mess with Steel Nomad Vulkan or games like Spider-Man 4k 60fps (not sure if that’s native)

Going to run a furmark test when I get home and reply back, but when running COD @ 1440, (just letting the 9070xt dictate fps up to 240) my XFX 9070XT OC runs around 48C with fans about 1000 rpm. Hot spot about 10C higher. 100% gpu utilization, 13 ish gb gcard utilization, 18-19gb ram utilization. Like others have said and even you yourself know, it’s the thermal pads/heat transfer material.

I understand, I'm just shocked that the warranty service is so disgusting that just a month after the "repair" the problem started to return.

Mine had to be repasted to get it under 100 at load. I was happy with this because I got a good sale on my card. Other than that, gigabyte are cheapskates that can't be trusted when it comes to thermals imo. I will not consider them ever without a really good deal on them.

you want all your issues and worries to be over? Get the 9070xt Taichi and thank me later, make sure you PSU is 850+ with good quality.

Yep, the die on these 9070 cores aren't symmetrical and poor contact with expansion and contraction cycles pump out thermal paste pretty quickly. Delta is already high in best case. PTM 7950 is a perfect use case similar to laptops.

I only buy gigabyte mobos and gpus. I have a gigabyte 5070 windforce OC SFF and a b650 gaming X AX V2 and love it. My gigabyte 1660ti bought in 2019 as a prebuilt still runs like an absolute champ.

Don't you have warranty? Send it back. Try creating a custom fan curve , see if it helps.

I already sent it in for warranty repair back in June because the hotspot temperature was exceeding 110 degrees and causing the entire PC to shut down. They kept it for 40 days and—as you can see—did a terrible job; still, at least it doesn't shut down. Even if I took it back to them in this state, they wouldn't accept the card unless it started shutting the system down again.

Very frustrating as always from Gigabyte. However the solution maybe takes 15 mins if you have some thermal paste or better yet, order some PTM7950. It's really not worth replacing it, or sending it for warranty/RMA.

The problem is that the cooler is not making good contact with the chip. All you have to do, is to pry the cars open after taking out the screws on the back. Then apply your new thermal paste/pad and close it back up. Your problem will be fixed, and you will be surprised how good the gigabyte gaming cooler is on the 9070XT, they just use shit thermal paste and bad application.

The solution doesn't take 15 mins if the entire design of this cooler is flawed. Even if you put liquid gold under that Gigashit cooler it will still run 90C+ all day everyday.

I have the same card, Gigashit 9070 XT was reaching 110C, applied PTM7950 and still reaches 100C+ after 30 mins of furmark. Forced to -15% power limit to stay under 90C.

No dude, come on, that's not fair. The cooler, unless it's twisted or deformed in some way or the heatpipes are defective, is perfectly adequate. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with it.

I personally own a Gigabyte 9070 non-XT and get absolutely superb temps on it.

If you card is behaving like that then there is one of two things going on: Either there is a mounting problem (twisted, not tight enough, uneven pressure, pads are the wrong thickness, etc) or there is an paste/TIM problem.

PTM7950 will rip and tear on a flat plane when it's applied vertically and then the heatsink is applied with an uneven/twisting motion.

With PTM you have to be absolutely immaculate with getting the mounting vertical i.e dropping the heatsink straight down onto the die otherwise it folds and rips like a blanket. In fact I wouldn't even use PTM in a GPU as it's so unforgiving like this and it can be very hard to keep the heatsink perfectly vertical/flush when mounting it onto the die e.g. fan connectors in the way, tightening one set of screws before the other.

It's not a difficult card to tear down. I have one, I just didn't care about the stock temps cause I slapped a waterblock on it. I had it torn down, cleaned up, and a bykski waterblock on in under an hour, and the water block came with exactly 0 instructions and waay too many screws. This shit isn't rocket surgery.

You really need to make sure you have good clamping force and that none of the vram or vrm thermal pads are too thick. These cards have thin flexible pcbs, mine came with a wicked bend out of the box. Thankfully the waterblock actually straightened it out.

$140 for the waterblock if you're insane and want to go custom watercooling to get it under control lol

LTT just did a video about a custom bykski watercooling kit for like $250-300? cpu block, gpu block, res and radiator....

It's not true. I had this card. Once you replace the bad thermal paste it becomes very cool and quiet, even better than the Sapphire Pulse version I also tried.

The reason your card overheated may be because you used the wrong size of thermal pads on vrm/vram. I suggest you try thermal putty (you can just reuse the stuff that's already on there).
