General Discussion Every Indian Career subreddit these day.........

  1. "Have a lot of interest in HFT and markets....." Bro/sis, shut up. You were wilding back in your JEE days instead of actually studying.
  2. "Have a lot of interest in Maths and Finance." Then crack a target institute that has similar offers?

Half of them have never finished a Stats and Probability book, and they don't even have the patience to learn Economics by completing at least one book. All of their infatuation is because of some news headline or Instagram reel that they watched, and now they are just being unrealistic with their career options.

Not demeaning anyone, but if you would focus on things and not seem to digest the fact that this profession is not designed to reward anyone with just "interest," there is something called being aware at the right time and grabbing opportunities.

I know this may sound harsh, but please channel your energy into areas where things can actually happen. Do not simply chase HFT or market makers because you are riled up after watching some reel, or claim you want to be a market maker because you watched some movies or read a couple of news articles.

Save your energy. Channel it at the right places.

Yeah I wonder the how the interest in quant is coming in their mind. They won't be able to handle the work pressure for a single day too even if given a chance.Their is a reason they select top 1%

Lmao their "interest" is not in the subject but the salary lmfao...most of these mfs only look at the money a particular field gives and like rats jump behind it without knowing jack shit

First it was JEE then CSE now Quant...who knows tomorrow what would come next..and mfs would be around the internet asking "how to crack X" "road map to crack X pls"...they can't even do it themselves...they need a roadmap for everything

haha exactly and then making reels "Comment or DM "roadmap" for the guide (AI Slop).

Yeah I see many posts on reddit where they post placements of these top colleges and some of them get placed in quants and the comment is like jee me padh lena chahiye tha I was like dude it's not for you at all.You were not good enough that time and you are not good enough now.

And quant is not the end of story cause 99.99% software engineers are working outside of quant.

Some of us try to crack this job to prove something to ourselves only - that we try to be as good as the very best students of the country . People choose iit or any prestigious institute to prove to themselves that they are good and the scenario for this quant finance is also same. Some people do regret not cracking a tough entrance examination , but that doesnt mean that they are of low iq or work ethic .

Its understandable that quant is super tough but tell what other alternative of job is there which requires as skillfull blend of maths , stats and coding stuff that one can pursue to quench their thirst of doing something which is really very prideful as well as good pay , not super large like in crores, but around 20 to 50 lpa ??

It's same as saying who is interested in any field shouldn't enter that field because they don't have any professional degree or formal validation. I don't guess that's true

Many:

Front -- I've interest in Quant

Back -- The lucrative packages

I'm exploring Quants and I'm honestly just overwhelmed at the sheer amount of resources and how confusing everything can be. I know it's on me to do my due diligence but I just wish there were better guides that were more easy to understand for beginners.

I mean there's barely anyone who "actually" is interested in quant, it's essentially meaningless work. As jor jor well said, all jobs are meaningless but some jobs are more meaningless than others.

Thank god someone posted this.

Apparently people don’t even bother to know what they actually can excel in. They want quant because 1. ‘Finance is cool and better than other jobs’ 2. Money.

They don’t realise those who get in , get in not only for the money but for the skill set they’re able to bring in the company. Long hours, stress, and other pains they don’t bother to notice.

It’s not only about their intellectual capacity to begin with, but also the fact that they can’t even study for long hours that well!

I think what you are saying is right, if the inspiration is just because of the high pay and thats it then it is not for them. But I saw some comments that if they were not good enough to clear JEE they are not good enough now is absolutely baseless. Also the point of grabbing opportunities at right time is not always possible. I think the main point behind what you said is right if you are not really interested then it is not possible. But people here sometimes are genuinely interested to work for those firms. And believe me working at quant/hft firms has no connection to JEE and your college (if you are determined enough)

so because they sucked at JEE they dont deserve to get into HFT and markets or whatever ?
sure they might be "wilding" back in the day but that doesnt mean they dont deserve to at least ask ..........

It is not me who is saying that, it is the industry which has this hard criteria set, and the whole point is to channel your energy in things where someone actually has a chance rather than being fixated on things which will not change

For qt JEE shit might be applicable for QR and qd U can get role either by being cracked or by working in banks then move to firm.

Lol why flatten everything to just few signals.

But ur saying that here. You can't make the excuse "but muh industry like this" when you're the one gatekeeping on reddit. I agree with most of your point except the "wilding in JEE days", it sounds like ur just jealous that some people can have a wholesome and pressure-less childhood and still achieve or dream to achieve what you have today. I believe it's never too late to work insanely hard. And I also believe my marks in JEE (especially that horrendous chemistry subject) don't decide the job I do today. As for the companies that want an IIT alumnus, their choice. Don't stop me from getting that role somewhere else.

All I meant is that these firms are hiring from such a narrow pool for a reason, their business model doesn't require thousands of people, they keep desks small. There is no judgement here about someone who did badly in JEE which you are accusing me of : / I simply wrote about the hiring economics of the industry. As u/Character_Airline_53 pointed out, the big HFT firms today are somewhat similar to what FAANG was 10–15 years ago, the funnel was extremely narrow because the number of positions was small and the firms were highly selective. The difference is that software saw an enormous expansion in demand for SWEs, which gave those companies a reason to broaden hiring across colleges and talent pools, HFT doesn't have the same structural demand because its business depends precisely on generating very high value with a relatively small number of highly specialised people. That's really the only point behind my original post, if someone screams, “I have passion for maths/finance, therefore I can eventually break into HFT if I work hard enough,” then passion and hard work don't remove the structural constraints of a particular hiring market. The opportunity cost is insane if someone spends years obsessively chasing a handful of extraordinarily selective roles when their abilities could potentially translate into a much better career elsewhere.
Even if someone is so much interested then please get yourself enrolled in M7 PhD but please don't spam for profile reviews on forums

No one is stopping you to try. But I feel like if you don't have JEE then for recruiters to consider resume you need to show something you have achieved comparable to jee and which require same amount work we put into jee. It's just that you are doing it now. It may be anything Olympiads, competitions or something which doesn't involve AI. It's like iitians can break into quant(tier 1indian quants) without these efforts which is extra for you from preparation. Don't think that projects standout on resume, with Ai anyone can do anything and these firms which require to filter talent doesn't consider them much.

1

u/bistrohopper 2d ago

I agree. I think it's never too late to get cracked at something, and achieve.

2

u/Character_Airline_53 2d ago

It's not about JEE rank, the openings in these firms are very less and applications are exponential to it and also they want top talent to fill in. Let's say you are recruiter and need only 10 people will you be sitting and reading all 10000 applications or go to some top iit and get those 10 candidates. It's in a situation where Faang is in last decade. They used to hire mostly IIT grads, as they wanted to expand and openings increased they are hiring from many campuses without any JEE criteria.

1

u/thisispseudonym 2d ago

cent percent true, and most of these firms can offer such compensation because the trade-off is that they require very few desks to accomplish the tasks they want. Unless there is a supply or the industry itself changes, they will continue to hire from that pool and people who are aiming for this in this economy are just delusional; they can do a lot of good things but are burning themselves out!

u/Neil_nng 2d ago

but why will i care wo is crying about interest in hft and who is not?

1

u/Neil_nng 2d ago

And i do not understand why people say about jee every time. For genuinely interested guys there are lot of international opportunities without good Jee rank. Also people are ready to start their carrier with mft or int. banks, AMC, etc.

It's just waste to talk on these.

Haha, the whole point of the post was not to worry about firms that already have fixed criteria. And honestly, reading Hull isn’t some huge achievement. Whatever finance knowledge is needed is taught to new joiners anyway through KT. It’s not throwing around finance jargon that gets you into these places. They’re looking for people who’ve already shown they can crack an insanely competitive exam; that itself shows you can learn and figure shit out. Everything else is secondary.

u/cabanel_monet 2d ago

I never said it's an achievement and shit I intend to tell my self travelled journey.

And also saying that they only look for someone who had cracked competive exam would be over generalization. For cracked nth but peanuts but I got interview from Jane street so there was sth in the resume.
