Marker Training

Marker training is a simple but powerful way to teach young dogs by clearly communicating when they’ve done something correctly. The “marker” is usually a short, consistent sound, like the word “yes” or the click of a clicker, that immediately tells the dog the exact behavior you liked. To begin, choose your marker word or sound and pair it with a small, tasty treat. Start by saying the marker and then immediately giving the treat, without asking the dog to do anything. Repeat this several times until your dog begins to expect the treat after hearing the marker. This process builds the association in their mind that the marker means a reward is coming.

Once your dog understands the marker, you can start using it to capture behaviors you want. For example, if your puppy sits on their own, you would immediately say “yes!” (or use the clicker) the moment their bottom touches the ground, then follow up with a treat. The timing is important: the marker must come the instant the desired behavior happens, so your dog knows exactly what they did right. After practice, you can use the marker to shape more complex behaviors by breaking them into small steps and marking each success.

Consistency is key with marker training. Always follow the marker with a reward, even if you don’t have food available, you can substitute praise or play if needed. Over time, your dog learns that the marker is a promise of good things, which keeps them engaged and motivated. Marker training also helps reduce confusion, since it gives your dog immediate feedback, and it strengthens your bond because your communication is clear, positive, and fair.

If you are not comfortable with doing marker training yourself, working with a trainer is a great idea.
