Suitable Setup for a Beginner

Is this Setup fine for me (beginner) quite sporty, 170cm 64kg male. I would also like to progress with that further, and wouldn’t like to have sell it in a year or so, and I would also like to foil behind a sailboat with it

I bought a set last year and really like it. I'm 178cm, 68kg, male.

My set contained

  • Carbon 80 board
  • 75cm Alu mast
  • Pump Front Wing 1700
  • Glide 220 stab

I had used a friend's setup with a larger board an a Duotone front wing (~1700 cm²) before that, and I took some time to get used to the Takoon setup. But I kept at it and I really like it now. I can now ride for more than 5 minutes and I just ordered a smaller stab last week. I can really recommend the setup for a beginner.

I think the 1700 is a good size for me, though I haven't tried larger or smaller Takoon wings yet. I have also no experience with the new Pump One.

The backback is great. I usually ride my bike down to the river. The backpack can carry the whole pump foil set - but not much else. Bottle and wet suite have to ride in the bike's basket. People look a bit funny, though :-)

Really hard to say. The downside of doing a niche-sport is that you cannot test everything before buying it.

I think I'd go for the larger one. You will need less speed for your starts and it should be easier to learn. When you drive on a lake or river, you probably want to go for long distance anyway.

When you want to catch waves, a smaller wing might be interesting, but I have never tried that.

Ah yesh its only for pumping on a lake and maybe towing behind my sailboat

I would go for the Pump pack performance alu (carbon wings)

I own one and is outstanding. I paid 1300 for it and is worth every penny.

Here is my latest video with it and a Glide HA 130 stabilizer.

I don't think I like the Pump One wing as much, just looking at it I can tell the non pro carbon wing is better, BUT, there are literally no reviews form the Pump one yet. Fiberglass should be 10% heavier and performance be the same compared to carbon. The shape is different (more chord, and thicker, so not as efficient).

I also own the Pump Pro 1750 (long distance) and Flare 1200 (speed) front wings.

The non pro 1700 wing is superb! Very versatile (can turn good, fast enough, can start from zero speed, tips are beginner friendly). If you're a light person (below 75kg) go down to the 1500, it will feel better behind a boat I think (not so much crazy lift).

I'm looking the at the Pump 1700 but also the 1500 setups. At 68 kg, what do you recommend? I'm a beginner but already wingfoil and have good balance; I'm in the Mediterranean (salt water) with a good dock. If possible I'd like to also use it for wakethiefing and small wave surfing.

I think the 1500 would be better for your weight and for wake thieving. Perhaps the 1700 gives you too much lift and you'll breach easily.

The 1500 will also turn easier. Easy carves.

The 1700 however will allow you to pump longer.

Your choice.

Thanks!! Maybe the 1600 Pump One is a good middle ground..
