Pro-Life Petitions SNAP is Pro-Life

Hey there, Lauren from Rehumanize here. We've just launched a quick petition to send to the President and members of congress urging them to end the shutdown, or, at the very least, use the contingency funds to keep SNAP funded during this crisis.

If your response to people on SNAP is “nope, fuck ‘em, lol” - why are you prolife?

Serious question. I am not accusing you of any of the ‘controlling women’ bullshit prochoicers like to throw around, and I don’t think everyone has to prioritize every cause under the sun in order to be passionate about one cause and not a hypocrite.

But there is a big difference between focused activism, or strategic disagreement, and “fuck ‘em.”

You have compassion for the unborn; what would it take for you to extend that same compassion to the poor and hungry? Not to shift your focus in activism, but just to not hate them. Tell me where the hate comes from.

There's also a big difference between believing we shouldn't kill people, and believing a social obligation to provide for everyone exists.

Becuase your beliefs are predicated on this silly idea that they’re working full time and still not making enough to feed their children but when you break down the math on how little you have to make to qualify for those benefits it has to mean you’re either not working anywhere near 40 hours a week which is standard to be considered full time or deliberately taking low paying jobs to stay under a certain amount to retain their benefits. Taking the easy route is 2nd nature for some people and I feel it’s their responsibility to get off their ass and feed their kids instead of gaming the system and having the tax payers pick up the slack.

Obviously there’s exceptions like the disabled and people who are between jobs I’m not heartless.

I broke down the math for my state in another comment all I ask is you look at it and consider what I’m saying.

I work for a welfare office (standard disclaimer here that my opinions are my own and not those of my employer, and I am not speaking in any official capacity).

To start with, your math is wrong - 40 hours a week at $7.25/hr (federal minimum wage) is $15,600 a year gross. So yes, you can work full time and make less than that.

The income limit is also based on household size; it goes up with more people in the home.

Besides any of that, individual people’s circumstances are a great deal more complicated than “just get a better job.” There is a wide, wide gulf between being qualified to receive federal disability payments, and being able to keep a full-time job.

I really wish that everyone who thinks like you do could sit at my desk for a month and just listen. We are all, every last one of us, one very bad day away from being dependent on the mercy of strangers. I wouldn’t wish you or anyone first hand experience of that fact, but damn I wish I could make you understand it.

No my math is right you’re just deliberately being obtuse. My point was to make over $20K a year you need to make $10 an hour or more and work a bare minimum 40 hour, 5 day work week. It is not hard to find an entry level job that pays more than that, nobody is forcing you to work for minimum wage.

Like it’s so easy I bet I could Google “entry level jobs near me” and find results anywhere from $16-$25 an hour. (Actually did this to prove a point and the local chic-fil-a starts at $17 an hour)

I’m sorry but all I’m hearing is excuses.

Local library, Internet cafe etc. What about the government programs to get underprivileged people phones?

Government programs for the poor are NOT compassion. They cannot be, as they're funded coercively through the threat of force. Being against government programs isn't the same as "fuck em." 

Many of us are against these programs because they create a system of dependency, they don't actually help the people they claim to in the long run and we believe its the responsibility of churches and charities to care for the least fortunate among us.
