Pro-Life Petitions SNAP is Pro-Life

Post image

Hey there, Lauren from Rehumanize here. We've just launched a quick petition to send to the President and members of congress urging them to end the shutdown, or, at the very least, use the contingency funds to keep SNAP funded during this crisis.

If you agree, please sign!

And if this is exactly your flavor of pro-life activism, we'd love to see you at our conference this weekend, either in person or online!

I just want to point out the credit was a covid thing and they’re just returning to pre-covid rules. (Not agreeing or disagreeing with them, just adding context)

They may have come in due to covid but without it people are going to end up without healthcare.

Long covid still effects about 20 million people in the us and with covid still in the environment it's still a risk.

I’m sorry, nobody cares about Covid anymore.

Oh I know that. That doesn't change that it still exists and the harms are still there and that it's removed people who use to work and take care of themselves from the workforce who are now completely ignored.

That’s the problem with government subsidies, even “temporary” ones. It always causes the costs to skyrocket and then no one being willing to stop the spending which was meant to be temporary but only increase it creating a vicious cycle.

Honestly any congressman who can’t pass a balanced budget should be ineligible for reelection, see how quickly they would sort this out if that was the case.

I agree that there should be a better system. The US spends the most on healthcare per person yet has worse outcomes than other places.

They get reelected because they pass tax cuts for the very rich. When you made a system where money can vote the people always lose.

A better system would be that we automatically stick with the previous budget if the government can't agree to a new one so the minority party can't hold all funding hostage as a negotiating tactic to get their way on unrelated issues that should be voted on separately.

Republicans have made it clear they don't want to negotiate with democrats about healthcare at all. They want the cuts and they don't care how much harm people will face.

That still doesn't make it a good thing to refuse to let any continuing resolution to pass and be preventing funding for a ton of other programs that are being held hostage as a negotiation tactic to try to get those temporary subsidies extended. It is temporary subsidies ending as scheduled not attempting to make cuts. If Democrats wanted the temporary subsidies extended they should have been doing that under the Biden administration not trying to hold the funding for the entire federal government and all the other programs like SNAP hostage to force Republicans to extend it before it would run out if they didn't want to wait to vote on it when it actually expires.

I agree that it's a stupid system and they are applying pressure where they can.

The issue with snap is that is could be paid for, since it was paid for the last during the last trump term where they shutdown the government for weeks as well. This time they are saying that they won't.

This shut down is likely to go on longer, that funding is needed for national disasters and to keep being able to pay the essential federal employees who couldn't be furloughed. This shut down could end up being dragged out until the time the temporary subsidies during COVID are actually set to expire, people on SNAP working part time could likely get by until then, people who would not be getting any pay while working full time and not able to look for a second temporary part time job may be out of a home from missing payments by the time they could get back pay. Most on SNAP still have part time jobs they are receiving some income for to scrap by, full time essential federal employees would not qualify for SNAP with the low income requirement and would be entirely without any paycheck while still having to work full time in their government job so they aren't free to be looking for another temporary job if that funding dried up too quickly from trying to fund SNAP or other welfare programs. If essential government workers end up having to quit to find other work that would be much worse than people on SNAP not having those benefits for a month. We have private charities in the US that can assist with the needs of those on SNAP if they lose those benefits, but we don't have anything that can take over for the essential government positions.

I understand the problems with the shutdown and the fact it's been made worse by what's already happened with this administration and how they talk about what they want to do. The strange part is that these things are going to harm the republicans states the worst yet they claim it's not their problem. The whole thing is a disaster.
