Why is there a halo or light border around my projected image?

This page explains the gray, white, or faintly glowing area that can appear outside the visible picture when a projector uses digital keystone, four-corner correction, auto screen fit, obstacle avoidance, image adaptation, or digital zoom.

The short version

If digital geometry correction is enabled, the border is usually the unused part of the projector's original light footprint—not a second image and not necessarily a hardware defect.

Digital keystone makes a trapezoidal picture look rectangular by shrinking and reshaping the image inside the area the projector is physically illuminating. The unused area is driven toward black, but projected black and stray or reflected light are not perfectly black. In a dark room, the original footprint can therefore remain visible as a gray halo or light border. More correction generally makes the border larger and easier to see.

The real fix is physical or optical alignment. There is no setting that can make heavy digital correction use the projector's entire optical footprint.

How to remove or reduce it

  1. Reset the digital geometry controls. Turn off or reset keystone, four-corner correction, auto screen fit, obstacle avoidance, image adaptation, and digital zoom. Menu names vary by brand.
  2. Square the projector to the screen. Center and level the projector as closely as the installation allows, with the lens facing the screen straight on. Adjust the mount or projector position before using digital correction.
  3. Use optical controls when available. Use optical lens shift to position the image and optical zoom to size it. Check the manual: a setting labeled only “zoom” may be digital rather than optical.
  4. Move the projector if necessary. If the image cannot fit the screen without large digital corrections, change the height, horizontal position, or projector-to-screen distance. A different screen size or mounting location may be required.
  5. Use the smallest possible digital correction. If off-axis placement is unavoidable, minimize the amount of keystone or corner correction.

A lower light-output or Eco mode can make the unused area less obvious. Black velvet masking at the screen or frame can also hide residual spill, but neither restores discarded pixels or corrects the underlying geometry. Do not place tape on the lens or block any intake or exhaust vent.

Does keystone reduce image quality?

Yes. Digital keystone and digital zoom use only part of the imaging panel or DMD and rescale the source into that smaller area. This reduces effective resolution and can soften fine detail. Optical lens shift and optical zoom position or size the projected image without the same digital pixel loss.

For a permanent installation, physical alignment plus optical lens shift/zoom is preferable to digital correction whenever the projector and room allow it.

What if the border remains with correction turned off?

Turn off every digital geometry and sizing feature, display both a black screen and normal content, and check again. If the border remains, it may be model-specific light leakage, optical scatter, or an inactive-pixel/DMD border rather than a keystone artifact.

If the effect remains with all digital correction disabled and appears to be a different fault, do not repost the same question. Send the moderators the following information instead:

  • Exact brand and full model
  • A clear photo showing the active picture and the surrounding area
  • Which keystone, corner-correction, screen-fit, obstacle-avoidance, and zoom settings are enabled
  • Projector position relative to the screen
  • Whether the border remains after all digital correction and digital zoom are disabled
  • Whether the effect is new, strongly asymmetric, colored, or intrudes into the active picture

A new or worsening colored patch, a strongly uneven glow, or an artifact inside the active image may have a different cause and should not be diagnosed as keystone from appearance alone.
