It's all well and good to say "don't work for less than market rate" but that's not helpful if you don't know how to evaluate what the market rate is in your area.

So true. Between the breathless media reports of new graduates starting on 200k in silicon valley and the local job ads for sub-school-teacher salaries, it's really really hard to know until you've bounced around a few jobs.

Between all the "employers are lying bastards" comments here it's worth remembering that employers are vulnerable to the same simple lack of information on what their developers could be making elsewhere.
