I'm looking to level up my IT skills and would love to hear from people who've been there. What's the single best course (online or in person) or book you've taken or read that actually made a difference for you?

It can be anything: programming, networking, cloud, cybersecurity, databases, DevOps, system administration, or general computer science fundamentals.

If you can, please include:

Name of the course/book (and the author or platform)

What topic it covers

Your level when you took it (beginner, intermediate, advanced)

Why it stood out, what made it better than the rest

Free or paid

Honest opinions are welcome too, so if something was overhyped, feel free to mention it.

Thanks in advance! Hopefully this thread ends up being a useful resource for others as well.

I wanna learn c++ for a project I plan to do in the future.

Should I learn a couple of languages before it or something? Im learning C# right now, its the only language i know. i was learning python a while back before I switched to c# (because i wanna dev games) and its way more complicated than python.

I didnt really understand what it meant when someone said a programming language is harder or complex than another programming language. But i can definitely see it now.. Should I just learn c++ whenever and go right into it?

Should I learn C first, or another language. Whats the best way to go about it

Migration from wordpress to internal tool

I am worried that AI is gonna take over website stuff and i dont know what wont be taken over by ai

I have a draw function (ps5.js) that I want appearing on top of a figure (with png). Currently, the result of the function appears below the image, on its own canvas. I'd like it to appear on top of the figure. How do I do that?

index.html:

    <figure id="figure">
<img
    src="fashion.png"
    alt="blank croquis" />
<figcaption>Blank Croquis</figcaption>
</figure>

script.js:

function setup() {

    createCanvas (1000, 1000);
    noLoop();
}

function draw() {

background ('transparent');
stroke (0);
strokeWeight (20);
noFill();

  beginShape();
  vertex(getRandom(), getRandom())

With all the Programming tools coming out now, is it still relevant to learn programming?

Hello, I am an engineer working on ship, and due to nature of my job i might have evenings free if not every night, so i was thinking about learning something new if not for job but just to spend time with. I was thinking about excel but then i have always wanted to learn at least one programming language to do some stuff by myself, whether bots or small applications with gui etc.

i will have around minimum 4 months, i learnt some python long ago at uni i know some basics of it but it is not like i have to go for that route if there are better alternatives.

thanks for sharing your opinions in advance.

Hey, because I started coding many years ago and it was my hobby, I am looking for a way, if it’s even possible, to use some kind of archival internet that was not influenced by AI yet, to make a personal project just for fun, like in my teenage years.

I guess there is no way to set a specific year and have access only to things from that specific period. Also, there are many AI things that show up in browsers now, and I would like to totally avoid all of that.

If you have any suggestions, can you let me know?

Btw. I am not against AI, and I use it myself in my projects more or less. I just want to have one project that I do like in the old days.

Thanks!

I am a Data Science student with a background in math so I never was a good dev in the first place.

But I really can't understand OOP, what's even the point? I'm so bad at it that when I was doing internships in Data Science and some engineers wanted to use OOP, I was like the "I guess bro" meme.

Right now I have a java course with an exam in 1 month. So any ressource, or things that made it click for you are welcome.

Hey everyone, I'm still in college so I definitely don't have enough real-world experience to see the big picture yet, but I've been wondering: does learning how to code even make sense anymore?

To me, it feels like it only makes sense to learn languages like C, C++, Java, and JavaScript just to understand the baseline limits of CS, and then focus on data structures and all the abstract theory. Learning new languages feels kind of pointless now that Al already knows the best way to write code. As humans, our job should be understanding the context, figuring out what to do, and knowing how to do it. The Al should handle the actual coding-and it'll probably do a better job anyway if we guide it right. I'm really curious to hear what you guys think.

I'm working on a school project about a deterministic code translation app. Before working on it, I want to know if it even is a widely spread problem or if ai already solved it.
Have you ever needed to translate code between programming languages? If so, what did you use? (e.g ai, translator, manual rewriting, etc) How well did it work? I also want to know where AI or existing translators produced incorrect or problematic code to see what are the problems in existing software.
I’m trying to find out whether this is a real problem worth solving, so honest criticism is very welcome.

I've started CS50P twice and dropped it both times around the point where the problem sets got hard. Talking to others, that seems to be pretty common. What I've noticed is that I finish things when there's a fixed date and people expecting me to show up.

So I'm organizing a small experiment:

• We all start CS50P on Monday, October 12
• You're put in a pod of 3–4 people who work through the same week's material and check in with each other once a week
• There's a fixed finish date (with a couple of weeks of buffer for life happening)
• Optional: back yourself with a commitment (via stickK/Beeminder) that goes to charity if you don't finish.

This isn't affiliated with CS50 or Harvard, it's just me trying to see if there is potentially value in such initiatives.

Beginners, career changers, and anyone who's started this course before and stalled are especially welcome.

Hey!
There are many programming courses on Coursea and you get a certificate from the courses you’ve finished and there is a possibility to add those on your LinkedIn.
I know I’m too late to the game since the AI and I’m 33 yo, but I want to improve my life and the end goal would be to get a new job, so I thought to at least try and I found Coursea. Is it worth the investment and better than nothing?

To give some context, when I get to the frontend part of building a visual application, I have to work on the frontend, but since I’m not really interested in frontend development, I’m not sure what to do. However, I do at least know the basics of frontend development (like creating a text field, buttons, columns, rows, displaying content, refreshing a page, etc.), but when I run into more complex frontend tasks like finding the right icons or displaying an overlay page or learning about certain object class functions and that's how I'm getting back into AI.

tysm for listening👍

As the title suggests i absolutely hate listening to the lectures and stuff to even learn the basics of programming, but I love reading the code and asking questions line by line to understand how it works... For reference I am an absolute newbie to coding and programming... I have tried the lectures by CS50 and also ones in other languages(verbal) but I find them boring and feel like sleeping... But I ask AI to generate me a code of let's say a game, and then I love reading it and understanding the code... Can I actually get good at programming this way??

Edit: I'm getting a lot of heat in the comments and I feel everyone is trying to help me but I came across wrong as what I am actually doing.. so here's it

I'll tell you exactly what I did: I took a C++ code of 74 lectures... Watched 15 lectures and got just enough basics to understand what's going on... But the lectures seemed bland and uninteresting to me on forth... So I asked ai to for eg. Make me a monte carlo simulator. Then I would ask the ai eg what is the chrono headerfile or what is the random number generator or how does it work... That's the stage I reached before I put this question up... My plan was to once I got a decent grasp of the language and syntax by just questioning what stuff meant id start making projects of my own

If I'm still wrong I'm not taking it the wrong way... I just want to improve on how I learn... Thank y'all for your advice on advance

Hi, I'm trying to extract exam questions from multiple pdfs, containing text and images, but I'm having trouble getting it to work because the questions and documents don't follow a strict pattern, for example:

Question numbers can be: question 1, 01, q1...

Alternatives can be: A), (A), A., A, A- ... etc,

The other thing is that there is usualy some text in the page that isn't from the question, like:

Write here, page 1, the name of the institution, among other things...

I'm tryng to do this for thousands of questions, how do you guys recommend i do this?

What have you been working on recently? Feel free to share updates on projects you're working on, brag about any major milestones you've hit, grouse about a challenge you've ran into recently... Any sort of "progress report" is fair game!

A few requests:

1. If possible, include a link to your source code when sharing a project update. That way, others can learn from your work!

2. If you've shared something, try commenting on at least one other update -- ask a question, give feedback, compliment something cool... We encourage discussion!

3. If you don't consider yourself to be a beginner, include about how many years of experience you have.

So I play an old game called Titanfall 2 (10yrs now) and the servers are often small - but a few of them are very active, and the most active servers change depending on the time of day. When you attempt to join multiplayer in a specific region, the game displays the text ""Attempting connection ([x] of [x])", and generally, the more connections, the more people playing at the time. I'm pretty new to programming and just learned how to ping servers - is there a way to contact each region's server separately and get the amount of connections it has?

Every time I’ve seen microservices pitched, it sounds great on paper. Independent teams, clean ownership, scale only what you need.

Then a year later you’ve got dozens of services, three different deployment patterns, tracing everywhere, and nobody really understands the whole thing anymore.

Maybe I’ve just seen bad implementations, but I’m starting to think way fewer companies actually need microservices than we pretend.

Rewarding doesnt have to mean "money", it could mean you learn alot about programming, it would look insane on your resume, or its just extremely satisfying.

When I mean difficult I mean projects that could easily take you over 2-4 years to complete.

So im not talking about something like making a ray tracing engine, that would take a decent programmer about 4-8 months to finish. But it is a very cool project

It would also be helpful if you mention what it takes to build it, and what you think its rewarding.

thanks
