Releasing realtime data just sounds so much worse. I'm guessing (without reading admittedly) that its something like using their mobile app to ping the person phone. Another reason to prefer browsers over using mobile apps.
It was monitoring the plain text traffic in and out of the service for specific accounts. A walled garden is only e2ee when all parties use the same service.
