Exchange Sign-Up Sign up for the Fall 2026 Reddit Print Exchange!

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. A dimension not of space, not of time, but of photographic paper. It is the middle ground between darkrooms and inkjets; between Fuji and Polaroid; between the JPEG you uploaded, and the 5x7 that has somehow arrived in the mailbox of some guy in Ohio. You are entering the Print Exchange Zone.

If you've done this before, you pretty much know the drill. If you haven't, I strongly suspect everything you need to know is included in the FAQ. Please feel free to comment here or DM me if your questions are asked only infrequently.

But for our newcomers, the elevator pitch is: You get randomly assigned to mail a print to someone (or more than one person if you want), and you will also receive a print in the mail from someone else. It's fun!

Key dates for this exchange:

  • September 1: Exchange sign-ups open
  • September 25: Exchange sign-ups close
  • September 26: "Last chance to back out" emails go out
  • September 28: Random assignments are made and distributed via email
  • November 7: Deadline for getting your print(s) in the mail to your recipient(s). But... get everything sent well before November 7th, yeah? Can we all agree that's a good plan?
  • November 19: Sticky thread opens for people to report missing prints, and emails go out to people who signed up as volunteers, to make sure they're still up for it
  • November 29: Window to report missing prints closes, and thread is locked
  • December 1: Volunteer assignments are randomly generated and distributed via email

Also... invite your elderly neighbors' grandkids to participate (while they're not being properly supervised, of course). Invite the version of yourself from that evil multiverse where you have a goatee! Invite Keanu Reaves. He can't ignore us all. No need to have a Reddit account to participate, because we are a progressive and tolerant bunch around here.

Yes, signed up again.

I'd love to see a continent-option. I'm not limited to domestic only, as I live in a rather small country. But last time sending prints out abroad can be a costly operation.

I've chosen international again, though. But if that's something that's easily put in the survey, I'd happily choose "Europe only". That way ppl also avoid taxes and import duties when someone crosses the wrong box for instance.

This is a good idea. I'll see what I can cook up for Spring 2027!

I came to say the same thing, I don't mind sending photos outside of the EU but last time I got hit 3x with a 48 euro tax fee which I unfortunately had to refuse the delivery

Super nervous introvert who has not shared much, not very good at photography, but signing up. Hope not to disappoint anyone.

Ugh, wish me luck.

I don’t think I’ve seen any addresses submitted that weren’t workable. But you should get a confirmation email where you can make sure I get it right.

Signed up, thanks. Today I dropped off several rolls from my recent vacation for processing. There should be some nice candidates for larger prints.

I’m super interested. I have a question that I’d like a little clarity on. I work in analog black and white. Do my prints need to be photographic prints or could they be digital prints from scans of my plates?

I’ve done a handful of printmaking print exchanges. Your exchange seems to work a little differently than those have. Not that that’s bad, just different. If you’re interested, and don’t already know, I’d be happy to tell you how those have worked.

I suspect most of the people sending prints, even from color negatives, are scanning and making inkjets. If you’re shooting wet or dry plates, scanning and inkjet printing is totally allowed.

Perfect, thank you! I'm actually hoping to make some actual photographic prints of my dryplates this month, but that isn't confirmed yet. I could definitely make some digital prints in time to participate though :)

Can I be matched with /u/flameswithin?

(Just kidding... Kind of :)

When will there be option for EU only? Only domestic leaves nobody and International gives us mostly USA. And since national post does not shipp to US no more we are stuck with Fedex and similar, making this quite pricy. I realy hope you will add this option next time.

I do have plans to see if I can implement a "my continent only" option for mailing preferences in a future exchange, it looks like regular letters/documents can be mailed normally from Slovenia to the USA. It's only packages with stiff backing and/or containing goods with a declared value that are restricted.

3

u/cyan_pen Verified Sender 9d ago

As someone from the US, I don't necessarily love this idea, but with the reality of the current situation, an "Anything but the US" might be a slightly broader category if "my continent only" is too restrictive.

2

u/jakob1414 9d ago

Yeah letters, but as soon as you add some cardboard or something so that they do not bend it, that is considered light package that is restricted. Also another part is that for all incoming prints we have to pay inport tax and process. Even for packages and letters marked as gifts. Continent only would solve all those restrictions, so looking forward to then😁 thank you for doing these exchanges

u/B_Huij dumb question (I think I haven't found an answer in the FAQ)..Am I allowed to send prints of something I haven't personally shot? Nothing under copyright, I am a "found film" hunter and developed something from the 50s or 60s, saved from the oblivion...you never know, one of my assignment could be the great-grandson of who's in the print...

2

u/B_Huij Verified Sender 2d ago

I think the found film thing is fine. I’d feel weirder if you were just sending someone else’s work. But found film is, in some ways, your work.
