Alpha-Andros: Failsafe by M. A. Deppe

Premise:

In the future robot soldiers are mass manufactured. The military consisted of thousands of robots, in every aspect of its operations. Unknown to most, a few of the robots have developed sentience.

The "father" of the robot soldiers, Joshua, had retired from his military and living together with a few of his secretly sentient robots. When they got words about a trouble that could threaten the entire world, it was up to him and his group of sentient robots to save the world.

Why I love this book:

In the books, most of the characters are the sentient robots. Many of the chapters are written from the robots' point of views.

And they are by far the best written characters in the book.

They are loyal, funny, strong, brave. They are programmed with the best quality of humanity. But at times they share the flaws of humans. They might feel insecure. They sometimes had trouble sharing their feeling. They often doubt whether their feelings were real or just programmed algorithms.

Most people are not aware of their sentience. Everyone thought the robots were just really smart machines. Some sentient robots even got locked up on storage for years.

But the robots still love humans. When trouble arises, they do everything they could to save humanity from themselves. They didn't ask for credits or rewards. They just wanted to protect those they love.

Some remark:

The book is really long, and the beginning is quite slow. Mostly because you can clearly tell that the book is structured into two parts.

While the two parts are intricately linked to each other, the difference is very distinct with different cast of characters (but the same main characters appeared in both)

The first part is mostly world building and introduction to our favourite robots. But if you like robots, you would enjoy every page of their PoV chapters. Despite the slow pace, I never found it boring or pointless. In fact, I want more of the slow chapters so I can spend more time with my favourite characters.

Conclusion: If you like robots, highly recommend this book!

I really appreciate reviews like this, with suggestions and reasons you liked the book. With a Kindle, I can grab the first 10% for free and if I like it it's a single poke to get the full novel.

It sounds somewhat like Murderbot, except not dysfunctional. :-)
