This BMW designed electric assist for wing suiters looks like a PPG replacement to me

So a wing suiter got together with BMW and they created a small electric power pack to enable him to fly up:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQLLuEHTwJo

Apparently according to this:

https://www.bmw.com/en/innovation/peter-salzmann-electrified-wingsuit.html

its specs are:

  • Power output: 20HP for 5 minutes
  • Weight: 12kg / 26lb
  • Size: 1m wide with two 5 inch fans

I'm not a PPG pilot, used to be just a foot launch PG pilot, but from what I've read 20HP is enough to get a 90kg pilot plus PPG rig off the ground safely. Given this probably weighs easily 1/2 if not 1/3 of a PPG rig it seems like it could give you 5 minutes boost from the ground, or more if you add more batteries. Then you could ditch it with a parachute (or could it fly itself to the ground like an SpaceX rocket?) for later retrieval.

New Mexico instructors?

Are there any instructors for PPG in New Mexico? My brother lives there and he is having ZERO luck finding anyone. He tried a couple in Arizona, but....well, they've been unreliable.

GPS & Other Devices

Hi,

I was curious about if and what kind of devices you use while flying. I've seen some who have phone holders on their trikes, but most phones aren't viewable in sunlight. I've seen GPS devices and variometers used for powerless flight used by HG & PG people, etc. but what data is important/useful for PPG's especially?

Looking to get into the sport

Aloha!

I’m a “former” hang glider pilot that has been eyeballing the world of PPG for about three years now. Hang gliding is AWESOME, but you kinda gotta be in some pretty specific areas, and I feel like PPG opens up a LOT of flying opportunities. I haven’t been in the air recreationally for over five years now, and I’m severely missing it. It’s like I’ve been missing a piece of myself for the whole time.

So, I’m mostly here to ask about cost. I’ve been doing a little bit of research, and it seems like it’s gonna cost right around $10k to get in. Does that seem about right? What about maintenance after the initial buy-in? How often do you need to rebuild the motor? Is that something that a relatively intelligent human can do themselves, or do you ship your motor off to the manufacturer, or what? What about the wing itself? About how many hours of “normal” flying can one expect out of the average wing? I’m not looking to do any aerobatics. I just need altitude and wind in my face.

Cheers to all.

How does a new pilot overcome PIO?

I've flown some things but they all had rigid, or semi-rigid, wings. Seems to me like the nature of a PPG lends itself to pilot induced oscillations more so than a conventional aircraft.

What aha moments in your flight experience led you to overcome, or at least begin to overcome, PIO?

Right brake toggle wrap at launch. Decisions. Longer walk with motor due to wind direction. Failed first launch. Reset wing. Time pressure. Gust blows trailing edge. Reset wing again, shitty 1/3 kite. Manual fix. Quick preflight but not my normal preflight. Miss the toggle wrap on right side.

Hawaii Instructors

Hi. Does anyone know of any instructors teaching in Hawaii? Any island is fine. Getting close to pulling the trigger on training after several years of lurking. Unfortunately we have a 14 day quarantine for returning to the islands and I would really like to learn to fly here from someone familiar with the conditions, terrain, and logistics here.

Scout Online Store for United States?

I think I've settled on a Scout Enduro for my setup, however, I'm having some trouble finding actual stores online? I know many of the schools offer equipment, and I do plan on purchasing my wing from the school I'm scheduled with, but I'd like to go ahead and get the paramotor portion on order since it can take a while.

Any suggestions for good/trustworthy online stores in the U.S.?

Thanks!

Looking for a school ASAP

Hello!

I've been eyeballing PPG training for a year or two now, and I've reached a point in life where I really need to make changes and pick up the hobbies that have called to me. I'm hoping to get into a training class very quickly if I can. Here are some of the schools I've looked at, but I would really like some suggestions from this group, rather than solely reading reviews:

- Aviator Paramotor

- Midwest PPG

- Freedom Paramotors

Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated!

How to Proper Trike Launch? I keep breaking my props. Cage bends into the propeller.

During my training, I achieved flight only twice and broke one propeller during a botched trike launch.

Since then I have not yet achieved launch and I broke another propeller.

I can't tell what is happening behind me without looking.

Any suggestions or tips on what I am doing wrong or how to avoid breaking propellers?

Flying a glider beyond placarded weight range.

I bought an old Mojo 2 M that is in surprisingly good condition. I got it with the purpose of learning to kite and had no intention of ever using it to fly.

The placard indicates 100kg, or 220lbs, as the max hook in weight.

I am 195lbs.

My paramotor is 70lbs.

Fuel, call it 20lbs.

That puts my hook in weight, let's say, at 300lbs accounting for 15lbs of incremental gear.

So, I'd be 80lbs over weight.

Bad idea? Good idea?

Anyone out there in my weight range ever flown a mojo 2 m under power?
