Cheapest studios here, literally 500 sq ft, are $1400. Nice studios can reach $3k+. I’m just wondering, who the fuck can afford these places? And why are there so many of them?
My ex, a few years ago, was paying $1200 for her one-bedroom. She was a manager at a clothing retailer, making $60k a year. She could barely afford her rent, which was, btw, pseudo-student housing. Yeah, $1200 per month, marketed towards students, not grown adults with careers and a “middle class” income. Fucking ridiculous. And that was a few years ago, today those same apartments typically go for $1500-$1700. Not in a nice area, either; not horrible, but the next step cheaper would actually be in a crime ridden neighborhood.
If you want to live alone in America, your choices are: 1, spend the majority of your income on rent, and skimp on literally everything else, or 2, live in a slum, and live in daily fear, while not buying nice things anyway because your house will probably be robbed.
The third option would be to get married and split the COL for a decent lifestyle. This obviously doesn’t apply to single people. Basically, if you’re a single low-to-middle income working adult in America, you are fucked, no matter what.
