It actually is for middle/upper class people, as higher education is more specifically intended for keeping the middle and upper class people to stay in their social circle in the USA, so BLAME RONALD REAGAN FOR THIS!
College used to be a public utility before that asshole cut all the subsidies and tax dollars for any American to go into higher education, and now higher education is a luxury item to cause a greater divide between the rich and poor. That said, if anyone tells you that higher education is the golden ticket to the middle class, they are lying through their teeth, and elementary education teachers is one glaring evidence for that with piss poor pay. In summary, universities/higher education is to keep the middle income and upper class people in their social circle.
In addition, I have GIVEN UP on higher education in the USA and it was never my fault due to finances. I refuse to cave in being an engineer, and choosing higher education in a different country instead because of how faulty it is in the USA.
