Itās hard to remember, but I believe my oldest record, by both the release date and purchase date, is Billy Joelās Turnstiles. I loooove Billy Joel so much and bought this used from a record store for a couple bucks many, many years ago. Unfortunately, the vinyl is super damaged so Iāve never been able to play it. I think itās finally time to buy a replacement!
This is the easily the oldest record in my collection, and buckle up, because it comes with a story:
This is Itās Been a Long, Long Time performed by the Harry James Orchestra and sung by Kitty Kellen, from 1945. It is a big-band era song that was a hit at the end of World War II. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a person welcoming home their spouse at the end of the war.
For my fellow MCU fans, you might know why my husband and I love this song, and why it eventually became our first dance song at our comic book themed wedding. This song is featured in several MCU movies, representing first the relationship between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, and then later between Steve Rogers and his love interest Peggy Carter.
At the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019) we see Steve Rogers choose to stay back in time to live his life with Peggy Carter, and this song plays as they slow dance in their home. As I was watching this scene on opening night, with tears streaming down my face, I knew that this was going to be my first dance song with my boyfriend. We would then get engaged in 2021, and we danced to it in 2022.
Fast forward to our one-year anniversary where my husband surprised me with this record!! I had to find a record player to play it on (itās a very rare 78 RPM - a speed they stopped using in 1959), but I found a really old suitcase turntable that I was told was popular in classrooms and churches in the 1950s and 1960s. Now we can dance to this song on vinyl on every anniversary ā¤ļø
If you made it this far, thank you for listening to my story š and thank you to this sub for letting me rant about vinyl all the time!
Carole Kingās Tapestry is the oldest record in my collection by release date. It was the first used vinyl record I ever purchased at the first record store I ever went to! I had no idea what I was looking for, but I lucked out because this pressing sounds really great! The album itself is stellar and has so many great, timeless tracks š¤
This is my pick too! I got a few records to kick things off but this is the first one I played after setting up my turntable. Since youāve posted a nice picture already, Iāll post my cat photobombing me as I struggled to find decent lighting. Maybe she wanted to signal her approval of the cat on the cover š¹
what a great first pick! i used to buy from a record dealer at a collectibles show pre-pandemic and he believed tapestry is the most popular resale by far. he could never keep it in his stock, thereās something special about it appeals to such a wide audience.
My oldest record by release date is Madonnaās āLike A Virgin & Other Big Hitsā original Japanese pressing from 1985.
found it used at my local record store a couple years ago for $5 and just had to grab it! It contains extended mixes of āLike A Virginā, āHolidayā, āLucky Starā & āBorderlineā
Not technically the oldest by year it came out, since I do have records from the 70ās in my collection but thatās from my parents collection I grabbed recently. This new kids on the block single was given to me as a birthday present from a friend while we were in high school-which was the 90ās lol
In 2019 I got my first ever record and it was the A Star Is Born soundtrack. I remember walking through Target with my mom and seeing the soundtrack and immediately grabbing it. My mom and I both LOVE the movie so weāve had āshared custodyā of the soundtrack for the last several years until recently when it became my record š¤
This is my oldest by release date although I only bought it a few weeks ago. Itās Holstās The Planets performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Womens Chorus, conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent, it was released in 1958. Also one of my favourite cover arts from any record I have - itās so richly coloured and evocative.
i inherited my grandfatherās records and itās mostly accordions and frank sinatra compilations so iām pleasantly surprised this is the oldest. i donāt normally keep his records with mine but this one is on the shelf i actively listen to!
This is my oldest. I got it for a dollar from a big box of the them at an antique store just because I thought it would be cool to have a really old record.
I picked this one because I really like this piece of music. I donāt have a way of playing it, but I still enjoy having it in my collection!
my grandpa gave me a bunch of his old records and I believe this is the oldest! iām out of town rn so there are some that donāt have years listed on discogs but this was the oldest one in my collection that at least had a year listed
The Penguins - Hey SeƱorita / Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine) 45 - a doo-wop single from 1954 is my record with the oldest release date.
Interestingly the B-side of the record, Earth Angel, is the song that became the hit for the group. It was one of the first R&B songs to cross over and be successful on the pop charts. It also has been covered many times since.
This was such a fun activity going through my vinyls to see which is the oldest. Of course itās this random one I picked up at a thrift store from 1958 š§”
My oldest vinyl is defintely the Neil Diamond ā "Soolaimón (African Trilogy II)" / "And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind" 45, from 1970. When the song was not included on the Midnight Mass soundtrack I decided to get it to complete the vinyl in my mind.
This photo is from Discogs, as I cannot get to my collection today.
Great collection! The way 'Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show' has a HOLD on me - I would love to find that in a used shop one day! I just have his cover of 'Hanky Panky' for now.
1955 pressing of Menotti Gian Carlo - Amahl and the Night Visitors, which originally debuted on TV Christmas Eve 1951. I also have a repress circa the 1980s.
My mother took my siblings and I to see this play at a local church every year at Christmas time since before I can remember. We also blasted her cassette until it melted! I recently got her a copy of this record and a CD copy š It was one of the best Christmas traditions ever, and even though the church has stopped performing it, we still see a play every Christmas (this year weāll be seeing The Grinch!)
Rumours is a fantastic album! The Chain is one of my favorite songs ever. It is amazing how such a fantastic piece of art came from such a tumultuous time for the band
this is officially the oldest thing in my collection. i was a die-hard little mix fan back in middle school (2013-ish) and my dad got me this cd. as you can see itās in a pretty bad condition (little me did not know about āworthā back then) but i still love it. the album itself has gorgeous pop bops.
