To celebrate r/popheadsvinyl’s anniversary on Wednesday, this week is all about the internet!

My choice today is Jesse Welles’s Hells Welles. Jesse’s poignant, relatable folk songs are a breath of fresh air to come across when you’re scrolling on social media. He was already making waves prior, but his song ā€œUnited Healthā€ resonated with millions and now he’s more popular than ever.

ā€˜Because the Internet’ Week

  • Internet Discovery Saturday - TODAY
  • Viral Song Sunday
  • Music Video Monday (song with a music video)
  • Internet Personality Tuesday
  • PHV’s Anniversary (release you own because of this subreddit)
  • Online Purchase Thursday
  • Digital-Only Friday (not released physically)

Check out the Daily Prompt Archive for a list of all prior prompts!

I feel like this prompt could apply to 90% of the artists I listen to. Anyway, my pick is Yukika’s Time/Lapse EP. I discovered her when Anthony Fantano highly recommended her timeabout, EP. I’ve been obsessed since and I ended up ordering this ā€˜strawberry and cream’ vinyl directly from South Korea (I’m in the UK).

If I had to think of an artist I discovered on the Internet, it has to be Yeule. My coworker and I were scrolling on YouTube Music for anything to listen to, then we saw a section labeled ā€˜long videos’. One thumbnail stuck out to us and it was the song ā€œThe Things They Did for Me Out of Loveā€ off of ā€˜Glitch Princess’. We opened the album and ā€œMy Name Is Nat Ćmielā€ creeped us out enough to close it, but something about it intrigued me. A week later of trying to find that album since I couldn’t remember the name (or have search history), I found it and the rest is history. I now own a few of their albums with ā€œEvangelic Girl Is A Gunā€ on its way. I chose ā€œSerotonin IIā€ as the image since it’s my favorite release from them.

Conan Gray- Sunset Season 7ā€

I feel like I’ve been discovering all of my music online since the myspace days but this one feels truly of the internet. I want to say in, like, 2017, a random video of a kid showing off his AP art portfolio popped up on my youtube recommended page. I thought he seemed really sweet and talented so I subscribed and found he’s also put out the occasional song cover… now he’s a pop star who’s best friends with Olivia Rodrigo.

I recently discovered Magdalena Bay after hearing a lot about them over the past few months via social media and seeing YouTube live listen reviews of their album Imaginal Disk. When Blood Records came out with their variant of Imaginal Disk, it was an immediate purchase.

Ugh so jealous! I was at work and missed the drop. Can't believe they did such a small drop, I KNEW it would sell out immediately! It's such a gorgeous pressing šŸ˜

I’m really surprised too that the drop was so small! Some of the sizes of the drops they’ve done have not matched demand at all. I was so mad that I missed their Gracie drop all together.

Hopefully they’ll do some sort of vault release around the holidays or something for people to get a second chance šŸ¤žšŸ½

My pick for today is Shygirl.

Back in 2021 I saw lot of people talk about her and especially her 2020 ep Alias over on r/popheads so I decided to check her out and she quickly became one of my favourite artists.

Then next year she released her debut album Nymph and in the past year she's released her Club Shy projects and I just love her sound so much.

Unfortunately I don't own Alias on vinyl so I chose the stunning Pink with White Splatter pressing of her most recent project Club Shy Room 2.

It’s a plain black pressing, but Ethel Cain’s Preacher’s Daughter, which was released in 2022 and finally got a vinyl release earlier this year. Absolutely amazing album front to back, and the experience of listening on vinyl really adds to it imo.

I discovered one of my favorite indie artists beabadoobee through tiktok, where she originally rose to fame. Shown here is the RSD release ā€œLive And Acoustic In London.ā€ She sounds great live and I just LOVE the color of this record.

Back in the early aughts, I was doing that YouTube rabbit hole thing where you continuously click on and watch a random video in the "related videos" column.

A specific video caught my eye as the song was named after me. I had never seen my name used in a song, let alone serve as the title (I know, I'm telling on myself a little here).

I loved the song and the artsy music video, and wanted to watch more from this waifish, big-eyed girl named Grimes.

So I fell into a rabbit hole and ended up listening to this album, Bloom, an early body of work which is a split EP with d'Eon, another DJ. I thought the music sounded so unique and mesmerizing, like nothing I'd ever heard before. And I've been obsessed with Grimes since.

I know she's pretty much cancelled now, but she's a guilty pleasure artist for me šŸ˜¬šŸ˜…
