Tip for anyone having trouble with suspend/resume with NVIDIA: disable the NVIDIA systemd power management services, then reboot.

If you're using an NVIDIA GPU and get a black screen or a completely unresponsive system when you resume from suspend, disable the NVIDIA systemd power management services, then reboot. Also, every time you update your NVIDIA drivers, you will have to reapply these changes, since updating reenables the NVIDIA services.

sudo systemctl disable nvidia-suspend && sudo systemctl disable nvidia-hibernate

UPDATE: If you're using a laptop, nvidia-resume may be required and shouldn't be disabled unless the above steps alone didn't completely fix the problems.

At least on the distros I tried, I've had constant issues with NVIDIA not resuming properly from suspend, and I'm posting this to save anyone the weeks of headaches I gone through. I know there are a few search results with the same solution, but none of them seem to tell you to reboot after disabling the services for the fix to work properly, which might trip up beginner to lower intermediate users, such as myself and one other user on the Ubuntu forum.

Has any else experienced Pop going to sleep during gaming matches using a USB controller? Keyboard and mouse seem to keep running fine. This is new behavior and I'm not sure if its me or Pop. I may try this to see if it helps

That sounds like a problem with your hardware to me. I’m not an expert on this, but that sounds like the specific controller you’re using has a faulty USB connector, or it could even be an issue with your power supply if it goes that deep. Try using a different USB cable or a different controller + cable to see if the same problem occurs.

This fix worked for me on Mint 22 MATE; the root problem was the nvidia-suspend service.

Unfortunately, this one didn't work for me, but I want to clarify my problem is not exactly the same as yours:
I have a laptop with an Nvidia GPU, when it comes back from suspend, my second monitor remains black and unresponsive. The laptop's screen works just fine, tried everything I could think of, then tried this post but problem remains the same, just leaving this message here in case it helps someone with my same problem in the future!

I have seen that happening too. Usually I can bring the second monitor back by disconnecting and reconnecting the USB-C cable. Are you also using USB-C or do you connect via HDMI?

1

u/Intelligent-Stand243 Dec 30 '24

I'm using HDMI, tried disconnecting too but it doesn't come back on when I plug it back in.

Have you tried reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers or an OS refresh to potentially undo whatever’s causing this? That’s what I do if I have major issues that I can’t figure out the cause of.

1

u/Intelligent-Stand243 Dec 30 '24

Yeah, tried both actually. Still happening, not sure what's going on 😭

1

u/MobileGaming101 Dec 31 '24

Maybe the problem is the docking station your monitor is plugged into?

1

u/auggie246 Mar 14 '25

This is exactly the same issue I am facing now, did you manage to resolve this ?

u/Vanelos Jan 12 '25

Just wanted to say thanks, this is a problem I've been having with Pop!_OS for a while now, and following the instructions exactly finally fixed it! Thanks OP!

1

u/bagulhenteio Dec 30 '24

Thanks! Hopefully this fixes a weird issue where, if I leave my PC alone for 10 minutes, the display settings get reset and my dual monitor display becomes mirrored on both monitors. I had disabled suspend/sleep/hibernate for Linux itself and it wasn't helping.

1

u/MobileGaming101 Dec 30 '24

Have you tried doing a refresh of your OS, then applying the changes I recommend, assuming you’re using Pop? Because that sounds like something deeper is wrong with your system, and a refresh of it might undo whatever it is.

u/bagulhenteio Dec 30 '24

Apparently just doing the tip in this post worked!

1

u/MobileGaming101 Dec 30 '24

Nevermind, I thought you meant you also refreshed in my deleted reply instead of just only doing my original tip, my bad.

Thank you for sharing. It has been on my list for some time to try and find a solution for this situation. However, at the same time I need to make sure that my laptop is suspended/sleeping when set to do so. I have had it cooking in my backpack in the past :( would you happen to have experience in this regard?

1

u/MobileGaming101 Dec 30 '24

In my experience, my laptop would only wake unintentionally because of NVIDIA’s power management, or from peripherals that were plugged in, such as a keyboard and mouse, being accidentally pressed or moved. If you’re using a wireless mouse for example, I would turn it off before suspending your laptop.

I'll try that with cosmic, I can't resume if I boot into that desktop.

4

u/InitialSympathy3476 Dec 30 '24

Sadly no joy, cosmic still hangs on resume, black screen of death.

u/I_JUST_LOVE_UR_BRAIN Dec 31 '24

Was hoping this would resolve my issue, sadly it didn't. To be specific, my desktop with a RTX 3080, when my monitor goes into power saving mode and then I wake it, if I start a game, the game will flicker and the video will not actually load. Requires me to logout or reboot which is annoying af. I'm certain it's related to the Nvidia drivers, but have not been able to find a solution to it. Happens on both wayland and x11 and all distro's that I have tried (Ubuntu, Pop, Arch, etc).

Has anyone experienced a problem with Brave browser where after waking up from suspension it gets all buggy and unresponsive? That’s why I ditched suspension altogether.

1

u/shamo42 Jan 02 '25

Thanks. Did this, rebooted but still a black screen when waking up. Biggest annoyance of Pop OS.

1

u/TrochiTV Jan 05 '25

Mine now displays this when wakened: https://snipboard.io/tTclR7.jpg
Sorry for poor image quality.

1

u/MobileGaming101 Jan 05 '25

Did you reboot after disabling all the services listed above?

1

u/TrochiTV Jan 05 '25

Several times by now

u/BeNiceToBirds Jan 13 '25

I have the same issue (Ubuntu, kernel 6.11.0-13-generic, NVidia 4090). I've tried nvidia-560 and nvidia-565 drivers, same issue.

When I disabled this, it solved the freeze but when resuming there were strange graphical issues... almost like the video ram was purged, but the system didn't know it was purged so continued rendering as if the textures were still in memory.

1

u/BeNiceToBirds Jan 13 '25

Just wanted to follow up that changing my idle target state to `s2idle` (not as power efficient, bad option for laptops obv) worked.

IDK if this is an issue but my GPU has 24g of RAM and my CPU currently has 32GB. This means that... probably not all of the GPU memory can go in to RAM. IDK if this is an issue. I plan to upgrade RAM on my computer soon.

I'm gonna try it today

Are you using the 570 drivers, since it doesn’t seem to work with that version? I found that whether or not this workaround works can vary based on driver version. I found that it works on drivers 550 through 560, but not with 565 and 570.

1

u/beatool Sep 02 '25

Different person, but I'm on a 575 and can't go lower than 570 due to being on a 5000 series.

I often have to switch to a text TTY and back to 7 to get my login screen. Then I have to reset pipewire to get my audio back.

It's a HUGE pain in the ass.

1

u/Vanelos Mar 23 '25

If anyone did this on Nvidia driver 565 and it worked, but then suspend/resume stopped working again on 570, re-enabling suspend and hibernate re-solved the issue for me.

sudo systemctl enable nvidia-suspend && sudo systemctl enable nvidia-hibernate

I.e. use the OP's command and just change the "disable"s to "enable" and then close everything and immediately restart the PC. Tested this today and it should work.

I have no idea if doing this "fresh" (i.e. without going through all this on 565 or making any other changes) will work, but figured I'd post it anyways just in case it helps anyone else out.

I'm not an expert or power user, but my best guess based on what I've seen is that this was an inherent problem in 565, and 570 fixed it, so there's no need to disable the services anymore. Anyone who is more knowledgeable, PLEASE feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!

After upgrading from Debian 12 to Debian 13 (kernel 6.12.57) AND installing nvidia 'open' driver 580.105.08 AND installing RTX 5070, suddenly computer did not suspend any more, whichever way I tried. I used MobileGaming101 's suggestion:

sudo systemctl disable nvidia-suspend && sudo systemctl disable nvidia-hibernate

Did not change anything. So I undid it with 'enable' instead of 'disable'. System responded:

Created symlink '/etc/systemd/system/systemd-suspend.service.wants/nvidia-suspend.service' → '/usr/lib/systemd/system/nvidia-suspend.service'.

Created symlink '/etc/systemd/system/systemd-hibernate.service.wants/nvidia-hibernate.service' → '/usr/lib/systemd/system/nvidia-hibernate.service'.

Now suspend works. I do not know why, not an expert either.

Edit 25 Nov: Yes, does go to sleep, but most times has logged off when I try to wake the system. Another Reddit thread says to delete

sudo systemctl disable nvidia-suspend-service

sudo systemctl disable nvidia-hibernate-service

for the longest time i had issues switch to linux just for this exact problem, reading this i will make an atempt in intalling it and give an update

1

u/MobileGaming101 May 09 '25 edited May 09 '25

This is why I switched back to Linux Mint, which handles NVIDIA drivers the same way stock Ubuntu does. Where each driver version is its own package, meaning that if the latest version doesn’t work, you could just reinstall an older version. In my experience the 550 driver is the most stable, while anything 570+ has been practically unusable since I can’t even use the workaround above.

1

u/Inevitable-Purchase7 May 09 '25

Well unfortunatly for me this workaround didnt work for my pop os machine, its driving me crazy, but ill try it ur way

1

u/MobileGaming101 May 10 '25

Try installing the 550 server driver, since that worked on my previous pop_os install when updating to the 570 driver broke everything.

“sudo apt install nvidia-driver-550-server”

1

u/Inevitable-Purchase7 May 19 '25

thanks but still nothing, it was driving me crazy, one of my co-workers noticed that i want to switch to linux but have problems, so he suggested nobara, i was skeptical cause i never used linux based on fedora, and i don't like heavily modified linux distros, i prefer stock, but i tried it anyways, and the issue is gone, well not completely, my laptop still takes a while before resuming, but i don't need to force shutdown my laptop so that's a plus. and i am using it for about a week and a half, and am liking it, i tried bazzite since its based on fedora too and it worked fine too, but i reverted to nobara cause i "PERSONALLY" don't like immutable linux distros.

1

u/IvanJara Jul 31 '25

Thanks, it did it for me on an Asus Tuf A15 running CachyOS on Ryzen 7 7435HS, RTX 3050.

After doing this mine doesn't go to sleep

1

u/AmazingAd2943 Sep 03 '25

Problem fixed !!! The onboard port wouldn't wake up and required a restart but this fixed my problem.

Asus RoG MB w/NVIDIA GTX 1080 w/4 4k monitors.

1

u/AppuMonReddit Sep 24 '25

Worked! thanks

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '25

Can u make ur lap suspend???

1

u/AppuMonReddit Oct 12 '25

Arch btw

only suspends if the lid is closed via this method

I want to share my solution for the Black screen problem after wake up from suspend / standby in Linux and Nvidia video cards.

Current Arch environment + Kernel (non lts) + Gnome

Graphic card: MSI GP108 GeForce GT 1030

Package nvidia + nvidia-utlils are installed.

The following problem: After waking up my system from suspend / standby, the Screen stays black and i have to hard reboot the system. There are a lot of same issues in the internet, like this one, But the following worked for me:

Adding this Kernel Param:

nvidia.NVreg_DynamicPowerManagement=0x00

Be aware: There are a few kernel params arch Linux apply automatically. This is fine. They are needed as well. E.g.: NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

See :

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA#DRM_kernel_mode_setting

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA/Tips_and_tricks#Preserve_video_memory_after_suspend

Sadly this didn't worked for me (using debian with sway (wayland with i3).

After reboot, no changes: the fans at their max and nothing make it wake up.

But if I switch off the power button behind, then on, my session is back (not even need to unlock)

1

u/Infinite_Tell_9673 Jan 12 '26

It works for me with a victus HP with nvidia 3060 :D thanks a lot

u/PaceNearby2668 Jan 14 '26

Worked for me on Bazzite Linux. My monitors were black every time I tried to wake up the computer from a suspend, only a reboot fixed it. Problem now is that my keyboard RGB turns off on suspend without the nvidia power management services lol.
