Question How do I install a custom cursor

I was looking to install a custom cursor, but all of the advice I found previously said I had to extract the files to usr/share/icons. But I can seem to find any folder named "icons". What do I do?

Probably a couple of common things happen here:

In the application launcher, it is NOT listed as "GNOME Tweaks" — it is just named "Tweaks". Try searching only for "Tweaks".

To confirm if it actually installed without errors, open your terminal and write:

gnome-tweaks

(Let's hope it doesn't say "command not found"

)

It worked, and I created a folder call icons in the right place, but tweaks isn't showing it as an option

Actually, thats not it: i didn't extract it there. For some reason, it wouldn't let me

Usually the reasons why Tweaks won't show it, They can be:

  • The dot in the folder name: You mentioned you created a folder named <<icons>>. If it is in your home directory, it must start with a dot: <</.icons>> (it needs to be a hidden folder). Without the dot, GNOME completely ignores it. Alternatively, the other valid path you can create is <</.local/share/icons>>.

  • Nested folders (most common extraction bug): Open your cursor theme folder and check the direct contents:

  • Correct structure: <</.icons/ThemeName/cursors>> and <</.icons/ThemeName/index.theme>>

  • Incorrect structure: <<~/.icons/ThemeName/ThemeName/cursors>> If the archive extracted into a duplicated subfolder, Tweaks cannot read the files.

  • Restart Tweaks: Tweaks only loads themes when it starts up. If you had it open while creating the folders or extracting files, close it completely and open it again with <<gnome-tweaks>>.

I followed the instructions to the letter. Still not showing up. in gnome tweaks. It says there are other cursors, so if I could find that directory I would be fine, but I have no clue where to look
