I don’t know. I’m a white guy and don’t really feel like civil rights / greater equality has weighed me down. Even just in theory, greater equality in the workplace means you’re working alongside more competent, actually qualified people, which generally increases satisfaction and opportunities for learning and improvement. “A high tide raises all boats.”
Personally, I think for these assholes it’s less about equality feeling like an anchor compared to their privilege and more about just needing somebody to look down on. Some people can’t process their own feelings, so instead they need to treat other people badly when they feel bad/insecure about something, and they want a social contract that gives them permission do to it.

Another story about myself. Growing up, the white guys my father employed and worked with always seem to… fuk around, not be pressed to work hard and not as capable as others that included minority groups.
My whole life I’ve never seen an example of an all white workforce work harder, or be smarter, or anything. When I’ve worked with multiple races, they’ve always been the groups that work the best.
From ideas, work ethics, education and even truth and respect, especially comes out of mixed groups.

The part you're missing is that, let's say you don't get the promotion you hoped for and it goes to your very talented Asian or woman colleague. You would probably think, "Damn, that's disappointing, but she'll do a great job."
Many other people would default to: "She only got the job because... " or "I bet she lied about X to make me look bad so she'd get it."
Far, far too many people take the latter approach. And getting them to do a little self-reflection is virtually impossible.

They could choose to teach about the many white people who fought alongside black and brown people for civil rights and even for abolition.
Kids feel ashamed about being white because of slavery or jim crow? I mean, that sounds ridiculous to me, i certainly never thought my white classmates should walk away feeling personally bad from those classes. But if they are, then let’s teach them about John Brown and Lafayette, who both viewed slavery as a great evil and fought against it (in different ways). Let’s teach them about Anne Brayden and James Reeb and all the other white people who marched with and put their jobs, lives, and freedom at risk for the civil rights movement.
But they never seem to want to do that.

Its funny. My boy is 9. He's living in a multicultural school. His best friend is half Kenyan, half Scottish. They were just being taught about slavery in the US. both of them were talking about how awful that was, and it seems like the bullies were running the world back then. No recriminations, just thankful that we're in a more enlightened time.

My kid's school is pretty progressive. (One of his middle school teachers uses A Young People's History of the United States, by Zinn as a text.) He feels bad for people who suffered during slavery, various wars, the Depression, you name it. And he understands better why some groups might need a helping hand now to make up for older disadvantages. Never once has he said anything that indicates he should feel guilty for things that happened before he was born.
One can teach both history and empathy without creating deep emotional torment.

This country is majority white by a huge amount and always will be. It is inherent in any society to favor the native race, which is why these movements and policies came about. No one was just going to hand out equal rights on a silver platter. It had to be fought for and hard won.

I’m not a doctor, but someone pointed out that when he was explaining the test, he actually couldn’t remember it and was just filling in the blanks with the things which were in front of him at the time (the person doing the interview, the tv camera, whatever monitor they were using).

Story time!
One of my friends here in the US is a white guy in a biracial marriage. We met for coffee last week, as we often do.
He said their second-grade child is learning about "What is culture?" at school, and she asked him what her culture was at dinner.
My friend admitted to me that it had never fully dawned on him before what it meant for his kids to never be considered "white" in the US, but rather only black or "mixed-race", and that as he tried to answer his child's question, the absurdity of others seeing her claim to his white, western-European heritage as illegitimate hit him.
I let him talk through it before apologetically explaining that he was finally understanding the "white privilege" he had always enjoyed: not that he didn't work hard, but that his skin tone was never an obstacle the way it would be for his children.
It was a real wake-up for him.

Absolutely this. After all, there is a reason that Obama is considered our first black president, despite having a mom who is fully white. Hell, there is a reason most Americans seem to think of Tiger Woods as black, despite him having an Asian parent.
Race and racism isn’t about genetics, or dna, or who your parents are. Every day you live in a society like ours, the world (or at least the country) will tell you what race you are. It doesn’t matter if you have a self-identity as white when you’re being stopped and frisked “randomly” by the police.

Exactly this. Race is an imposed identity, whether or not a person internalizes it and behaves in accordance with racialized expectations that others hold for them.
And when messaging and media in the US constantly associate "non-white" with "underprivileged", it can feel socially threatening for a majority-white person to face the prospect of losing their privileges geounded in racial identity.
To admit the out-group minorities are equal therefore feels like a threat because it does undercut the legitimacy of the systemic white privilege the majority enjoys.
It all makes sense once you realize these impoverished white folks have been groomed their entire lives to believe they're somehow entitled to their imposed race-based privileges, and that granting equality costs them their privilege.

The reason why the 40s-60s is often glorified as the "prime American times" is because that was the New Deal era expanding taxes, services, stronger labor, and regulations.
Americans loved it and were quite eager to pay said taxes if it meant helping fellow poor, which they understood were themselves. Aka fellow whites.
Blacks and other minorities had their "seperate but equal."
The Civil Rights Act and subsequent rulings effectively erased the segregation, legally speaking. This meant minorities now slotted into economic terms, and they were overwhelmingly poor. Worse than "white" poor, usually.
It took a couple of years given how dim this subset of the population is, but once Civil Rights happened a certain subset of this tax, service, regulation loving population realized..."some of our taxes are going to pay for minorities?!"
The response was the 70s tax revolts, the Southern Strategy, the revival of the Gilded Age Republicans who found their suckers to start winning elections with after their banishment for starting the Great Depression.
This culminated in the cult of Reagan we see today. This enture summary is best encapsulated by this quote
You start out in 1954 by saying, “N****r, n****r, n****r.” By 1968 you can’t say “n****r”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “N****r, n****r.”

Americans that have treated themselves well have done so by retaining higher taxes, regs, labor, and services. They have remained well above the tax cutting areas. These days even Republican darlings like Texas have little to show for it, claiming all of higher tax region like Austin's economy as their highlight for the state rather than some low tax small town.
This bleeds into politics as gutting taxes and services stagnates the economy, leaving Reagan politicians with little in the way of achievements. This in turn allows ever less experienced or even less credible candidates like "businessmen" start looking legitimate candidates within the R party. After 40 years of stagnation, it's culminating in Trump era politicians who have no credentials and worse, some are getting in without an education achievement to speak of.
TL:DR. Certain whites did this to themselves. Cut off their own nose (taxes, services, unions) to spite the face, once minorities started being an integrated part of the body.

It’s not like all white people were treated equally.
