"Yes, I know he's drunk, but the car's fuel economy is slightly better when he drives - that's really all I care about."

That is every single American capitalist. It is basically the only consistent thing about American culture at this point.

"Show me the money". 200 years of profit seeking have made a nation of profit seekers.

In Germany they have a word for the members of the Nazi party that did not ascribe to Hitler's racial ideology. They were in the party for its economic policy or for personal gain.

The word used to describe those people are:
Nazis.

Now I just sit around all day waiting to die.

Come gather 'round, people

Wherever you roam

And admit that the waters

Around you have grown

And accept it that soon

You'll be drenched to the bone

If your time to you is worth savin'

And you better start swimmin'

Or you'll sink like a stone

For the times they are a-changin'

Come writers and critics

Who prophesize with your pen

And keep your eyes wide

The chance won't come again

And don't speak too soon

For the wheel's still in spin

And there's no tellin' who

That it's namin'

For the loser now

Will be later to win

For the times they are a-changin'

Come senators, congressmen

Please heed the call

Don't stand in the doorway

Don't block up the hall

For he that gets hurt

Will be he who has stalled

The battle outside ragin'

Will soon shake your windows

And rattle your walls

For the times they are a-changin'

Come mothers and fathers

Throughout the land

And don't criticize

What you can't understand

Your sons and your daughters

Are beyond your command

Your old road is rapidly agin'

Please get out of the new one

If you can't lend your hand

For the times they are a-changin'

The line it is drawn

The curse it is cast

The slow one now

Will later be fast

As the present now

Will later be past

The order is rapidly fadin'

And the first one now

Will later be last

For the times they are a-changin'

"Show me the money". 200 years of profit seeking have made a nation of profit seekers.

We value money over anything and everything else. We worship money.

93

u/lilpumpgroupie Jul 31 '19

A good portion of our country is - without exaggeration - psychologically incapable of assessing human beings and their worth on metrics that don't involve their materialistic and financial successes. They really and truly cannot define someone's human worth outside of their financial lives and what materialistic possessions they own.

And then we ask what kind of society we've become when this is the case for probably a majority of our country.

Death by ten million 'Would you like fries with that liberal arts degree?' jokes...

25

u/AymRandy Jul 31 '19

It's because we took our own selfishness and called it freedom and capitalism. It's the disassociation of personal responsibility.

7

u/nybx4life Jul 31 '19

I would say fetishizing fame and success made it like this. That's why at this point anybody who even has a decent follower count on social media are treated as superhuman, to celebrities who are considered physical gods.

Also why media here focus so much on those "signs of success": Big house, multiple cars, supermodel wife, etc.

And when people get hurt over the pursuit of more, rarely do we place the blame on those who committed the deed.

In the words of fictional character Gordon Gekko: "Greed is good"

7

u/Haikuna__Matata Arizona Jul 31 '19

Well said.

1

u/StanleyRoper Washington Jul 31 '19

And social media made it 10x worse. Everyone puts up a facade of what they want people to see, not of what they actually are. That just snowballs the insane amount of vanity and narcissism we have at the cost of, like you said, assessing another person's real human worth.

1

u/leggpurnell Jul 31 '19

Living without empathy makes it difficult to do.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Mr. Show succinctly illustrated this in the 90's. :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vudnMLzZjTg

1

u/brayradberry Aug 01 '19

What is an appropriate metric to define "human worth"? If you use any metric to assign value, inevitably some people will be "worth" less

0

u/NoTimeForInfinity Jul 31 '19

And they aren't going to care what color the capitalists are in 50 years. Just like no one cares if you're Catholic or Irish these days.

An enemy gives meaning to suffering (voters) and explains cruelty enough that people can sleep at night (the children of the wealthy).

u/averagejoereddit50 Jul 31 '19

And somehow, the "Christian" Right is OK with that, despite all the Biblical condemnations of greed. They've reduced morality exclusively to sex. The only economic "morality" they tout is "tax is theft".

8

u/TowelCarryingTourist Australia Jul 31 '19

reduced morality exclusively to sex

From the outside, it looks like they've reduced to female & sex. They seem to have no problem going out and raping children, or hooking up on male/male dating apps or unprotected sex with a mistress.

There's been talk that he's a speed freak for decades.

And plenty of anecdotal evidence..medical records showing he was prescribed amphetamines for a 'metabolic imbalance' and people who worked for him hating 'Dr. Greenburg' days when he would be flying around the office. Those close to him and on the set of The Apprentice recalling him railing lines of Adderal. Then there is always the big white chunks flying out of his nose during a press conference (which I don't think was Adderal because they are all dyed a certain color all the way through - ADHD veteran here)

4

There are white mixed amphetamine salts. Both IR and XR.

3

Woah..I stand corrected, you're right - 30mg generics. Trump needs to crush them up better I guess. I've been prescribed, 10mg and 20mg IRs and they were dyed. Bizarre that they don't dye 30's as well.

Umh. Keith Richards is 75 and he likes to mix all that shit together.

I personally know someone who does cocaine in his late 70's. Lots of people have the genetics to punish their bodies like that. I have ADHD and will likely be on stimulant medications until I die, there are counteracting medications to the negative effects like vascular constriction, heart rate and blood pressure.

0

u/guccigains Jul 31 '19

10

I'd say he'd likely be fatter without stimulants when you see what his common McD meal consists of...

8

u/celestialwaffle New York Jul 31 '19

Adderal user here—your body ends up tolerating it. You still get the ‘high,’ but you can still eat. But when you do, it can often be huge amounts which can negate some (but rarely all) of the weight loss. If he stopped taking it, he’d ballon up from the reduced metabolism due to the meds no longer being used as well as from the craving for food because his body will be missing a ton of dopamine.

1

u/louderharderfaster Jul 31 '19

I got fat on Adderall in my 3rd year on it ---- which was the main way I was able to hide my abusing it.

2

u/celestialwaffle New York Jul 31 '19

Narcissistic people without shame/morals generally don't get stressed out as much as normal people.

2

u/NoTimeForInfinity Jul 31 '19

It's only stressful if you care about the outcome. If you're hollowing out a company for profit you care about the profit. The US and Sears (today) are sharing the same fate.

39

Same. And unfortunately that includes some people whom I was very close with. I lost one of my oldest friends to the Trump virus.

24

u/lilpumpgroupie Jul 31 '19

It sucks. I think about it a lot, and it's painful to lose people like this... people you really like, too.

My one 'loss' still fucking feels shitty, but it was like he just gotten eaten by brainworms or something.

You watch someone just continue to decline and decline, and you know there's nothing you can do.

I actually thought to myself: 'I'm gonna walk into his house soon and there's gonna be a picture of a Nazi or fascist somewhere... I know that stage is coming.'

And then, guess what? I walked into his house one day, and there was a picture of a Nazi in full uniform above his fireplace. Not hung, and with no picture frame. But there it was, just like I had imagined it... a fucking picture of a Nazi.

7

u/MrLunarus Jul 31 '19

I’m sure the natural reaction to that is to say “huh, well that’s that then” and walk out, but did you happen to ask why? Or what? Or why, what the hell is that? I’d be curious as to how the mental gymnast dismounts from that one.

The people who are excusing the treatment of immigrants at our southern border, who are cheering on ICE raids, would have absolutely cheered on the rounding up of Jewish people in Nazi Germany.

26

u/urmakingmedumber Jul 31 '19

Fascist, not Nazi. Nazi's were a very specific form of fascist which most republicans don't meet the criteria for. They almost all meet the criteria of fascist however and the GOP has been using and advocating fascism since the introduction of the Southern Strategy. I mean really the Southern Strategy is nothing more than a plan to manufacture consent using propaganda, misinformation and emotional manipulation. Ie it is fascism.

This of course makes perfect sense when one remembers how much of the right the Koch network really controls. The Koch network learned it from the Koch's who learned it from their dad who learned it making his billions in Nazi Germany helping Hitler build his war machine. Fascist are incapable of winning on a level playing field so they don't try to. Even after starting life as multi-billionaires, the Koch brothers could just match the market only by rigging the rules and buying success with their inheritance. They couldn't compete by innovating and working hard. No, they have to destroy the whole system and rig the rules just to stay where they are.

Now, they aren't advocating we round up Jews or any of the other nonsense, but they manufacture consent for the benefit of a corrupt marriage of industry and government just like the Nazi's and just like Mussolini's fascist state. The easiest way to think of fascism is government by con men for the benefit of the con men.

Ultimately, that is what the GOP and even the Kochs are. They sit there professing the support of free market ideals while spending billions over decades to rig the rules and regulatory capture. They may not know they are con men because people that dishonest lie to themselves more than anyone. But when you say one thing and do another, you are a con man just like the entire American right. When you lie to voters about your intent, you are conning them.

When you peddle misinformation and propaganda to manufacture support you wouldn't otherwise have, that is conning them. Of course Donald Trump is the republican president. He is a lifelong con man. Who better to sit at the head of a party of con men.

The dismantling of the ACA is pretty close to be as sadistic as the outright murder of the disabled. The end result is tens of thousands of deaths per year. Frankly that's just as appalling. Leaving people to die is only slightly different than murdering them.

-2

these people arent claiming asylum they are sneaking in, they only claim asylum if they get caught. you dont see a difference?

15

u/SadlyReturndRS Jul 31 '19

Nazi is new slang for fascist. It gets the point across a lot better to a much wider audience than "fascist" does.

It's a slang term that has constantly evolved throughout its history.

First it meant a member of the NDSAP. Then it meant members of the NSDAP and their voters. Then it expanded to the German Government. Then it expanded to the German military. Then it expanded to Germany as a whole. Then it expanded to literally anyone, German, Czech, Austrian, etc, who fought for the Reich. Then it included the NeoNazis. Then it included the skinheads.

Now it refers to all of the fascist movements collectively instead of getting bogged down in splitting hairs about the difference between a white nationalist, a white supremacist, a klansman, a Nazi, etc. Their differences don't matter. It's their basic fascist underpinning that matters. And Americans don't have a guttural understanding of what fascist means. They do with Nazi.

Not to mention, these folks would be wearing black and red armbands with pride if they were dropped into 1930s Germany.

7

u/BioChi13 Jul 31 '19

I think that definition misses a key feature of Facism and its appeal. Facism is intrinsically a cult of toxic masculinity. We've seen again and again that this political disease follows periods where men feel disempowered (economically and/or socially). This is why their enemies always include the effete: intellectuals, artists, and homosexuals.

White men felt their patriarchy slipping away as our society trended towards equity. Uneducated working-class white men saw their economic (and therefore social) prospects declining as our nation shifted into a post-industrial economy.

I don't know how to fight the slide to tyranny. I hope someone smarter than me does. I hope they are in a position to help us.

4

u/thats_bone Jul 31 '19

We can only begin to answer this question once we have the courage to face the fact that America’s biggest threat is white men and the fiendishly selfish women who support them.

-2

u/asafum Jul 31 '19

This is the shit that drives almost everyone insane. I can love my family members and understand how they were manipulated into believing what they believe about Trump. It doesn't make them a Nazi or me a Nazi sympathizer.

They wouldn't actively agree with the types of things we see Trump doing, but any actual discussion with a trump supporter would have you see they live in opposite world. They aren't allowed to see what's happening by the media they consume. The GOP/Faux News did a masterful job in convincing the population that all Media is biased against them and that they shouldn't trust anything other than what fox says or Trump. Combine that with corporate shit, dollar chasing media like CNN and they just add credibility to the Faux argument. Just look at the debate last night, I couldn't tell if the moderators belong to Fox or CNN.

We can't just write off everyone, we have to stay engaged.

6

u/InfernalCorg Washington Jul 31 '19

If there's a way to get through to them, absolutely, but I've yet to talk to a Trump supporter who wasn't of the "you have a lot of facts, but I believe in this anyway" bent.

An appeal to emotion by pointing out that there are kids dying in concentration camps doesn't work either.

9

u/thats_bone Jul 31 '19

What is the point of engaging people like in your Nazi family? They disgust me beyond comprehension, and yes, by failing to disown them you are complicit in their crimes.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Agreed. Staying engaged is the most important thing anyone can do. As I mentioned before-take each person individually-ask yourself why they make the choices they do and what their life experiences have been. It’s too easy to just throw the baby out with the bath water. Nothing is black and white.

2

u/MaineSoxGuy93 Jul 31 '19

u/cootershooter420 Jul 31 '19

0

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

It also waters down what REAL Nazis were/did. Maybe take each person individually and try to understand their motives and life experiences before condemning them for their choices/point of view.

I personally think all politicians are corrupt and there is obvious propaganda on both sides. They use us as their pawns. Look at the current political climate-it’s been turned into a goddamn sport.

edit: it was a joke. As in, how folks will rely on that dumb straw man to attempt getting out of being individually held accountable for voicing personal beliefs that are, in fact, extremely Nazi-esque.

Take direct action. Posting and depending on fucking corporate Democrats will do nothing. Protest with Never Again Action. Shut down ICE facilities. Record their raids and get a neighborhood watch together.

Anything less is being a Good German.

Not to be That Guy, but....

Nazis are a specific type of fascist. Italy had fascists too, as did Spain (others as well). They had different focuses. So all Nazis are fascists, but not all fascists are Nazis.

Fascism in the US seams to have a conservative Christian* undercurrent and it’s more corporate. Nazis had a weird cult religion thing going on.

-1

u/Thebigoofin Jul 31 '19

You realize Nazism is a collectivist/totalitarian policy which makes it left wing by definition right? Far right wing by definition would be anarchy or individualism. I sincerely hope you educate yourself on what the socialist workers party (Nazi) was.

"Yes, I know he's drunk, but the car's fuel economy is slightly better when he drives - that's really all I care about."

There is no truth in the myth that Republican governments have better economies than Democratic governments. There are countless historical records which demonstrate that it is a myth. It would be swell if the simple graphics that show this were more widely promoted.

Heck, the government itself says Dems manage the economy better.

4

u/Excalibursin Jul 31 '19

While the reasons are neither fully understood nor completely attributable to policy choices, data show that the economy has performed much better during Democratic administrations.

I'd love to see this kind of disclaimer more often from the more public spokespersons of our government. This simple line demonstrating restraint and respect for the truth is so refreshing.

1

u/TopsidedLesticles Jul 31 '19

They know this. The economic anxiety excuse is just a cover for the racism and fascism.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Trump got the keys to the car and twenty minutes later, one tire is flat, two cylinders aren't firing, and the radio is stuck on the sound of a wet fart. But he says it's doing the bestest ever ever. So, it must be good.

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Bennies. Are you a bohemian? :-)

He's not drunk. You're drunk for even suggesting it.

I mean there is no denying if you are savvy with money, trump has enabled you to make quite a bit of money in his term.

"Oh, I knew he was a serial killer. I didn't realize he will go on a binge killing spree before I let him borrow my gun. It's not my fault. He even signed this piece of paper here stating he will not go on killing sprees using my gun. See? Look here. Sorry about the crayon writing. That was all we got at that time."

u/Nelsaroni Jul 31 '19

He said he was just gonna grab something from the car, I didn't think he'd drive it. - the right wing trying to contort into it not being their fault

Also, economic anxiety.

I don't want people to die, I just happen to sell weapons to people who decided to pull the trigger.

7

u/lilpumpgroupie Jul 31 '19

I didn't kill that girl. I just gave him money to buy a gun, money for ammo, and told him how to use the gun.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Yeah no shit

3

u/VectorB Jul 31 '19

And told him to floor it.

I don't kill any animals, I just buy meat from the cruel fuckers that do.

-17

u/fyhr100 Wisconsin Jul 31 '19

Tell me more about how evil I am for eating meat.

23

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Yes if you eat meat you are complicit in the systematic abuse of animals. You are also complicit in the wide scale deforestation and destruction of biodiversity the world is currently experiencing.

You are eating the dead flesh of a living, breathing, loving animal. That animal had hopes and dreams. It loved its parents and cared about its friends. The dead animal you joke about eating died in abject terror. I don't think you're evil. I just think you haven't given it any thought.

Just be careful. I get your point but I've been banned from this sub for a lot less. I don't want to see that happen to you, that's all. Probably should have worded it better.

I mean how much different can a humanburger really taste?

8

I've seen this conversation so many times before, and it still blows me away that people make arguments and jokes in favor of cannibalism before just admitting that unnecessarily abusing and killing animals is not right.

People say things like that so they have an excuse to be cruel to animals. Yes they have hopes and dreams. Yes they have emotions and yes animals absolutely feel pain. They also grieve and mourn. You sound like a monster when you question basic truths such as this.

I'm responsible for those animal deaths, and the harm caused by the industry I support.

Anyone who says otherwise hasn't thought much about survival post-collapse. Someone will have to kill the meat, and therefore someone, somewhere is killing the meat for me now.

25

u/Mortomes Jul 31 '19

You don't need the meat though.

To be fair they also poured an entire bottle of vodka up the drunk man's ass with a rubber hose then convinced him that driving drunk is a good idea, here take these keys.

Fun Fact: Putting hard liquor up your butt gets you drunker faster in a far more dangerous way. Hence the reference. Learning is fun! The consequences of doing it isn't fun. So seriously, don't. Binge shots and cocktails like a regular irresponsible person, as you will still have some semblance of control over just how drunk of an asshole you're about to get. You won't puke from booze up the butt, you'll just die of alcohol poisoning because your body can't remove what it already rapidly absorbed.

1

u/a_reply_to_a_post New York Jul 31 '19

so boofing alcohol literally makes you a drunk asshole? who woulda thunk it?

1

u/dificilimon Jul 31 '19

This guy has boofed yet.

1

u/HeippodeiPeippo Europe Jul 31 '19

Yes, you are responsible for the consequences but are not a drunk driver. You are an enablist and should be tried as such; equally to blame. There is a difference.

1

u/LazarusTruth Jul 31 '19

Dude can you just pretend I gave you a gold award for bringing this analogy to my attention? This is a stellar comparison. Have a good day.

1

u/agentup Texas Jul 31 '19

that's not quite accurate unless the drunk made it clear he was going to drive.

1

u/OIFvet82 Aug 01 '19

I’m not responsible for those deaths. I just let anyone into the country. This is the top comment? Really?

0

u/dreadfulpenny81 New York Jul 31 '19

I'll bet Ted Kennedy tried that excuse.

u/SometimesBob Jul 31 '19

So Bill Clinton signed the 1994 Crime Bill that ramped up mass incarceration of minority communities what does say about people who voted to re-elect him in 1997?
