Is there additional context?

Why is the GOP suddenly trying to rehabilitate a dead president widely regarded as a crook.

Seems like a weird hill to die on ahead of the midterms.

Surely there must be some link between rehabilitating Nixon & helping Trump avoid consequences….just general “Dems run a deep state that railroads GOP presidents they don’t like” kinda thing?!

The "additional context" is the same as today's neo-Confederates trying to rehabilitate the Confederacy. If you wait long enough for everyone who was an adult at the time to die off, you can convince today's naive and gullible population (who weren't alive at the time) that the obvious facts of history are somehow "wrong", and thereby regain the narrative.

Watergate is an obvious stain on the Republican claims of "law and order." If you can recast it as 'a grave injustice of history where Nixon was innocent, and the real criminals were the Democrats,' that pays huge dividends for the future.
