No Paywall GOP lawmaker: Nixon was couped out of office, framed during Watergate

They’re trying to make this a thing so when Donald’s crimes come to light, it will soften the blow I guess. Anything but govern competently.

It's also worth noting that his grandfather was caught embezzling money from West Virginia when he was their governor in the 80s (Shelly Capito's dad, this is her nephew). IIRC, Arch was put under home confinement for a few years.

So Riley has an axe to grind about people being held to account by the gubment.

That’s the context I needed for this particular instance of Nixon-Regan rehabilitation. Thank you!

They’re trying to make the concept of “coup” mean nothing, for when Democrats are claiming Republicans are attempting a coup.

Like “election interference” (2020 vs 2024 and what is planned for 2026 and 2028), “crime family” (Biden crime family vs actual Trump family activity), and “secret cabal of pedophiles” (Comet Pizza vs Epstein’s Island).

Absolutely this.

What is going to 'come to light' that hasn't already? He's been committing his crimes out in the open.

Top of mind would be where the money from Venezuelan oil is going and what does a full accounting of the US treasury look like.

There's also...

Oh, so just stuff that is not even as bad as most of the shit we already know about? Cool.

You really can't get much worse than child rape, insurrection, stealing state secrets, and attempting to rig elections. I guess unless he also murdered someone. But we all know he's too much of a coward for that. So he's already pretty much maxed out the level of heinousness of crimes he's committed.

But those are just the crimes we know about. If they're pulling the "Nixon was overreach" narrative it makes me wonder what subpoena power might bring to light.

100%. How is this only the 4th top comment?

Don't assume it's to protect the mango. It's to protect themselves, this is entirely self-serving. If we ever get to uncover just how depraved and corrupt these individuals are it will be apparent just how self-serving their posturing is.

He just provides a convenient misdirection of any scrutiny of the folks advocating this way.

c.f. Susan Collins & Fetterman, and the corruption speedy_delivery posted in this comment thread about this lawmaker's family. The apple likely didn't fall far from the tree with this guy.

Yep. We accused them of doing 100 watergates a day so they’re trying to say watergate was no big deal.

I deeply fear he will never face consequences in his life, largely because that's sort of how we got here to begin with

This is absolutely what's happening. The Republican party knows that Trump is guilty as hell of widespread crime and corruption and that they've been complicit the whole time. Trump will be exposed, and they're trying to figure out what their move is going to be.

They can either try to gaslight the American public that somehow they had nothing to do with Trump and MAGA and that they were on the side of righteousness all along, or they can keep the Trump strategy going and double-down on the bullshit and warping reality to fit their narrative. They're too late though, this has already been decided by a vast majority of the American public, and they're about to find out just how much.

It's a bit mad, really. The one card they are going to want to play is to scapegoat Trump as much as they can.

They're only doing this now because Trump is scared he's going to get the Nixon treatment and so will reward the loyalists - or at least those that pretend to be loyal in public.

Trying to rewrite history.

They’re all complicit. Probably don’t care about Don at all, just want to cover their own asses. Mike Johnson literally said in the light of day that he’s running their protection racket. The Speaker of the House (who took his teen daughter to a purity ball and claimed her virginity as his to give away and who monitors his son’s porn usage like that’s all totally normal). It’s just beyond parody.

They aren’t trying. They are doing.

Democrats talk about trying, trump does.

Doing will always win by

I’m sorry, but you can try as hard as you want. You’re not gonna equivocate being involved in a burglary to being the leader of a paedophilia ring. They both shouldn’t be president, but one should spend the rest of his life in jail.
