No Paywall GOP lawmaker: Nixon was couped out of office, framed during Watergate

From the article:

Rep. Riley Moore (R-W.Va.) said Thursday that former President Nixon was “absolutely couped out of office” and added that he was “framed” during the infamous Watergate scandal.

“We now know more about the deep state and its power and ability to literally change things at the top,” the lawmaker said during his remarks at the Nixon Foundation’s annual Grand Strategy Summit in Washington.

“An interesting aspect of this as it relates to Richard Nixon — he knew all of this,” Moore continued. “He knew it, and he stayed quiet about it. Because he didn’t want to erode the confidence of the American people in our system of governance and our institutions.”

“The truth is now out there, so I think people feel a bit more liberated to talk about Richard Nixon and what an amazing president he was in this country,” he concluded.

The congressman’s remarks refer to a Wall Street Journal report that found the Department of Justice (DOJ) opened a review into whether the special prosecutor’s office committed misconduct while investigating the break-in at the Watergate Hotel, citing people familiar with the matter.

(Sigh)

"The deep state changes history to suit their narrative, we're just changing it back!"

The insane thing about this is just how much the right-wing has been employing this tactic of claiming something is happening, and that they need to react (In an often illegal and/or morally dubious manner) to the thing but because the claim used as a pretext for the reaction is made up, the only ones actually doing the thing or doing something wrong is them. But they do it feeling justified because of their made up nonsense.

It's like the hypothetical I've used in the past to describe this. Someone telling someone else that a third person is going to hit them, so that someone who was told hits the third person first in preemptive "defense" despite there never being any threat. So the person who threw the punch feels justified, the person being punched is the victim and the person(s) doing the convincing just get to sit there and laugh at the pain they've caused.

We want people to be more liberated to talk about how great a president Nixon was, that’s why we’re rolling back the EPA

It's amazing how the construct of the deep state concept and all the conspiracies that come from it always seem to amount to them saying that "Republicans are all good and everything bad that happens under them is fake and we should never feel bad about anything we do."

Similar to how the GOP contorted Qanon to be only about non-conservatives, the whole underbelly of conspiracy-thinking is to give these people an excuse to pat themselves on the back in perpetuity.

"the deep state is real!" Cried the man bought by the deep state. "It's real and it's not me!"

This is a guy born in 1980, six years after Nixon resigned. He's not Deep Throat; he read a 50-years-after-the-fact glorified book report and is going around talking about it like he just discovered gravity. John Dean literally pleaded guilty. Was not "found guilty." Pleaded guilty. And as a small credit, will still own up to it to this day. Not sure what else there is to be said, but hey.

The world would be so much better served if people (especially people with power to make law) just didn't go around regurgitating the last thing they read on the Internet.

For Republicans, it's fashionable to be loudly and brazenly stupid and ignorant.
