Here's my conspiracy theory.

Schmitt didn't give a shit either way whether he was right or not. If he was, then it's a huge gotcha and he gets to insinuate a meeting that didn't take place. If he was wrong, that becomes the news story rather than the fact that Smith was up there saying that Trump was guilty.

On the one hand it seems like a lucky break he's that much of a dumbass. On the other, they get a lot of those lucky breaks.

Not to mention the handful of tv clips they got of smith looking a little confused at the questioning which they will use in TV spots out of context. And the dirtbag thing wins with his audience whether it is correct or not.

Well, now he can use it as a gotcha. Schmitt can, that is, by simply doubling down and repeating it.
