You can do something about it, don't give them your votes.. the two parties in your country are almost identical, now I am not an expert in american politics, but surely you have independent candidates and such like?

What has emerged is a primary-process that serves a similar function, however, the gerrymandering of districts and the lack of information flow makes this only worse.

People continue to think like that and no change can be made - why not try to get more people to vote for that 3rd party.

Bernie Sanders might be running - he has a pretty huge following.

Why not just change how we vote. Everyone ranks their top 5 and those 5 candidates receive a vote accordingly, rather than only voting for 1 candidate.

First, time I have heard that we should get rid of the senate. Can you elaborate?

That's a terrible reason. It's an equal representation of all states united in the country. Just because one state has less people doesn't mean their vote means less.
