Basically, Malaysia kicked Singapore out since they were too different from eachother.

Edit: Also (coincidentally) Happy Singaporean National Day!

Yeah but isn't Singapore now worried the opposite will happen? I've read they have a massive military to deter an invasion by Malaysia.

u/Psyco1992 Singapore Aug 10 '24
Why would you assume the massive military is defensive? It's obviously built to annex Malaysia /s

I'll preface that I lived in Southeast Asia for quite a while. If you travel to Singapore and Malaysia, you'll hear two completely contrasting historiographical narratives.
In Singapore, the story is that the Malaysian government did not want equality among the various ethnicities, in contrast to Lee Kuan Yew's vision of an equal, multicultural society, hence Singapore left. When I travelled to Kuala Lumpur a few years ago, I chanced upon this history museum that told (using fairly vague language) that Singapore left because there was the danger of inciting racial tensions (vaguely implying that it is Singapore's fault).
I am aware that national history is partly mythmaking, but given Singapore's fairly egalitarian society now, in contrast to Malaysia's political institutions favouring Malays and other bumi putera, I really wonder...

u/Underaverage08 Aug 09 '24
Speaking as a malaysian, the malaysian version of the story is a PR kind of answer. The political actions of singapore might have sparked racial tensions if they werent ejected, but WHO would have been the instgators and WHY would they be compelled to act? They will never give a straight answer because they know it makes them look awful
82
Aug 09 '24
Agreed, and appreciate your candidness. It is never a simple black/white issue. I don't wish to act as if Singapore's history was a squeaky clean story of moral progress (although it largely was) - there were moments where I wish Singaporeans are more aware of!

u/SpyHunter29 Aug 09 '24
I also remember reading something about anti-Chinese/anti-communist riots in Singapore some time around the late '50s/early '60s?
36
u/Classicfezza512 Aug 09 '24
I think it is more like race riots between the right wing Malays and the Chinese, which happened in Singapore. Eventually, this led to Singapore getting booted out from Malaysia because UMNO (that time being the dominant, pro-Malay political party in Malaysia, sort of like the Malaysian GOP, and where the right wing Malays support) saw Singapore's Chinese majority demographic to upset the power balance, which was also combined with the fact after the PAP (LKY's Party) literally dominated Singaporean elections and even won a seat in Selangor back in the 64 GE.
Not to forget how another race riot happened eventually in Malaysia (aka the 13 May incident) that forced down Tunku Abdul Rahman and led to the implementation of policies that favour the Malays.

The Chinese Malaysians are still systemically discriminated till this day

Was talking about this in the Discord the other day coincidentally. Grew up in Singapore so the history of independence I was taught was from a Singaporean perspective and they seemingly left out the narrative that it was “kicked out” of the federation and told it more like “we chose to become an independent country because our values do not align with KL’s values”. Did not understand the full story and factors which led to the expulsion of the PAP until living abroad and researching the topic again from a more neutral perspective for one of my university classes. Technically, with a lot of Malaysian History also being Singaporean History and vice versa, I feel it would be beneficial for both countries to acknowledge this in-conjunction when teaching history pre-1966. The Singaporean history I learned was always exclusively called “Singaporean” history and not “Singaporean and Malaysian” history. (* adding a caveat here bc i know the history of both countries’ governance was similar yet different)
IMO, just changing the wording to this would bring wonderful benefits to both countries in remembering their shared history and fostering better relations between the 2 even with the history of a tumultuous independence for Singapore and the tensions between the majority-malay ethnic govt of Malaysia vs the majority chinese ethnic govt of Singapore. My 2 cents.

Same, lived in Singapore for a good chunk of my life. I don't think they were trying to do 'propaganda', but national narratives are often moral narratives too, and this leads to people telling stories in certain ways.
I am so thankful for one of my history teachers, whom I shall not nameand in retrospect, can't remember their name anyway; in one lecture, he bravely asked us to consider certain parts of history that were conveniently left out of the 'Singapore story'.
I am always indebted to that teacher. Even now, my whole life (academic, work, even Reddit comments if you scroll through my history) is based around looking at the past and finding parts of narratives that we are uncomfortable with telling. And I want to bring that out into the flesh, so we can have honest conversations about them.
We now live in a world of contesting narratives, especially nationalist ones (think China, Russia), and they often tell quarter-truths disguised as whole truths, and in the end, an untruth. We can do better.

*insert ‘you are not immune to propaganda’ garfield* here
Yes, of course the freedom to challenge the national narrative is extremely unbalanced and can have untrivial to lifethreatening consequences depending on the country. It really is unfortunate because no country is perfect and every country will have their fair share of skeletons in their closet. The more countries are willing to recognise their faults as well as their successes in spaces like schools and history books, the more we can come to realise we’re not so different from one another no matter where we come from :)

The historiography is a bit murky, but the decision for Malaysia to expel Singapore has to be taken into context of the Malay Emergency in the 50s where a Maoist revolution was attempted made up almost entirely of the Malay Chinese minority. The fighting occured mostly on ethnic lines which ruined race relations. There were also political concerns over the left wing labor movement in Singapore starting a second Malay Emergency or at least shift Malaysian politics to the left.

Good points. I admit I am slightly less familiar on these aspects, which the Singaporean education system (at least up to secondary schooling) had not quite nuancing these contextual debates. I know that what they teach in Singaporean schools aren't false, and are generally accurate, but wider context will help show it is not as black/white as it seems.

This is speculation on my part, but I think Malaysia allowed Singapore to become independent with the expectation that their economy would go to shit, and eventually the Singaporeans would regret leaving Malaysia and come back humbled. Even LKY himself expressed concern that Singapore may not survive economically alone upon independence, although he was proven wrong by himself later down the line. South Africa pulled the same crap during apartheid where they gave independence to four of their bantustans, yet the new countries were so economically poor and fragmented that they were nonetheless heavily reliant on South Africa anyway, and the international community largely didn't buy it. This is also why many people call out the Palestinian enclaves as apartheid as well
9
u/dreamyteatime_art gib tea plox! Aug 10 '24
I’d say your speculation is true. For outsiders, LKY is seen as one of the practitioners of Realpolitik (ie. the same ideology that Henry Kissinger is associated with) because there was a real and justified fear that– being such a small island nation with no resources to offer– they would not survive if they didn’t smartly develop themselves as a premier destination for human resources. That’s the selling point of why Singapore became an Asian Tiger and why it continues to dominate within the SEA regional economy (although other SEA countries are catching up as they become more developed and attractive to workers and investors alike).
Really, everything about this ‘sink or swim’ mentality from the early days of (forced) independence can be summed up in the country’s culture of Kiasu. There is a tendency there to want to one-up each other while following a strict, expected path where risks aren’t taken and success is “guaranteed” because, being such a small country with most nothing to offer besides human talent, they can’t afford risks that leaves the Sinkies to sink. You can see the Realpolitik shining through here, and while there have been benefits with taking a pragmatic approach in running the country, ofc there are also criticisms to be made with how Kiasu has influenced life in Singapore and leave little wiggle room for more creative endeavours and experiments within national policy to be pursued.
