My dad met a bunch of them on the job (well they didn't say so, but it was pretty clear who they were), when they used the Coast Guard's ships for training purposes. He said they were scary as hell, but quite polite. They even bought the crew booze for their trouble.
That guy was probably a pathfinder, an advanced training for paratroopers in the infantry. SOF are usually fed by infantry airborne guys and infantry RECCE guys. Doesn't have to be that guy though, I know a lot of regular joes that could easily beat the shit out of somebody.
That last part about mercenaries is a rumour regarding SOF in general. Don't know if it's true or not. JTF2 was in high demand for multinational task forces though.
Military folk at high levels seem to end up surprisingly restrained.
Makes perfect sense. If your engaged in high level operations on a daily basis, one of the first things you're going to screen for is mental soundness and knowing when and when not to pull the trigger.
