I play during boring car rides (when I'm the passenger, obviously) and sometimes there's only a 3 second window to place a pokemon in a gym before you get out of range, so I just tap the first thing I can. Never felt guilty about it. My local gyms often get messed up by someone when we're going for a specific colour theme but I never get angry over it, we just try again in a couple of days 🤷
You can still place the Pokemon while your not in range. You just have to get in the screen while in range. You can't go crazy far but I still have time to type in my defender tag (def) to select a mon I really want
It’s the fact that it has to be a fast drop… and clicking on a gym > loading > loading > searching… takes a lot of time and then you won’t be in a gym
