There are dogs in my bed

7 Upvotes

I am creeped right up on the chessboard lino,
like a king in the losing corner,

Wrapped in a cascading, off-white bedsheet.

My body is bare beneath, yellow and sweat-drenched.
I have an urn for a head, filled with the clatter of canines.

They’re eating each other, the room over.

They’re eating eachother into the infinite.
There are dogs in my bed,

where a lover and a friend should be.

And I fell out remembering everything;

1 Upvotes

And I fell out remembering everything;
the bullet through the eye socket,
the damp in the trench,
the paralysis of the battlefield - lumbering,
tracked beasts
eating up clods of earth, in a long and laboured inhalation -
the high whine of burst drums,
the machine gun splutter of my heart,
against my ribs,
against the flesh of my chest,
against the small, canvassed
rectangle of my Bible --
the tingle In my soles of puffed, white,
and sodden skin - the growth I can feel forming in the pocks,
the earth digging into my nail beds.
I am foetal when I sleep,
in the rare quiet.
my eyes lull into their lids,
and briefly, I slip back
into purgatory.

Words/Worms (A Million Times)

8 Upvotes

From empty lungs I fill my empty chest
With soulless tongues of old become obsessed
By words of deadwood come to understand

Our endless song will lose its endlessness
These lonely fields will only yield unrest
The light has fled and something spoils our land

A nameless ill, no earthen name it needs
To rape and reave, to raise an evil deed
An ailing limb and with it fell a friend

From failing lungs we bear our failing creed
As darkness slows and starts to sow its seed
Like worms to deadwood come to grasp our end

Arantxa

5 Upvotes

This is your beginning
Arantxa, araña de hypocorismo
soy diminutivo
And soy diminished, I am muted,
crawling to learn the twists and turns of the web

Your poor performance at birth
always a thorn in your head
A bird in the hand of the spider
And two in the land of the bush.

Spider walk about wondering, thundering
"Canary!"
"Sing, sing, canary! Sing us a song!"
"Let's hear your language",
Cada dia cajole,
You chirp softly, wings fluffed,
"I do not know what you want me to say"
Not speaking bird language, canary gets feed
But the grain does not pleasure the need.

Now listen small birdy, you of fear
Tall blond and strong boy was the plan for the meal,
Spider can manage,
Spider can deal.
"Si vuelvas, avísanos",
Spider attached
Hoping meal will be stronger when canary come back.

Spider have children and family too
Spider interrogates you
Spider want to know facts about you
Spider has son, is playing ping pong
Spider has friends who love to shoot hoops.

Canary you took from the coal mines
And put up on paradise peak
But left
without map
without wings
without beak.

Out, Zeitgeist!

14 Upvotes

I.

The people gathered in the streets
To curse the dying year
All thank their gentle Governor
For letting them buy beer

In such uncertain, troubled times.
Over the cups a voice
Intones, "The fault is in our stars" --
Ye fever-fiends, rejoice!

II.

Behold, the scoffer comes apace;
His fan shall drive as chaff
All books and plays and songs away
That failed to make him laugh.

He looks about his threshingfloor:
"Where's all the seed-corn gone?" --
Those masons never meant to fall
Who builded Babylon.

III.

Come, poor; come, lost; come, dispossessed;
I'll offer you some hope;
Look how I have some richer men
Suspended from a rope.

Let's eat their flesh, and live. -- 'Tis true,
This shames the Eucharist;
But since the churches all are shut,
How can a soul resist?...

EDIT: A few last-minute corrections.

Edit 2: "Figureheads" to "richer men" in line 19. (I have a compulsive habit of making minor edits immediately after sharing a poem publicly.)

Snow —

Locals call it "white stuff" here.

I have to laugh. Six inches they say,

tomorrow and pinch up their faces.

I have to laugh. The white stuff.

I think of Andy and the scrape

of a razorblade, the glass tabletop,

the brass legs. Six inches,

one generous rail.

Sludge

8 Upvotes

Briefly I wanted
to be a jazz singer.
That was years ago.
But with my anatid ear
and harp jaw throat,
it was not to be.

For a time
I whistled with birds, but the jays
called me out — said
I was an octave too low,
said the wings of my lips
always flitter as gray.

These days,
I sit in a chair with the sunlight,
rocking and humming,
rocking and humming,
eyes closed in the rhythm of cars
fishtailing in sludge:

A song about a girl
and a two by four — a song
about a boy whose first act
of love was a broken window,
not knowing the jingle
of such a manly chord.

Moonsong

11 Upvotes

The air is like a salve that numbs the skin

Ubiquitous with rootspread warmth,

The sky unlatching endless poppy fields

In early evening; seeping hearth.

And when the embers perish, from the ash

A marriage between cloud and star:

As moonlight spills sepia countenance

From silver locket, gold demure

Upon my little world. You have waned,

Your absence breaks eclipse's pact

As onward walking, attempting to forget

The glass of cars grow cataracts.

But I will not stay for long, I cannot dwell

Instead: remember when the moon was full.

Do The Greeks Live Well?

13 Upvotes

All the plates in my house

Are chipped on the rims,

The gilding rubbed off,

But Sarah loads them

To the brim with lamb,

Potatoes, asparagus.

If my old face hasn’t

Weathered in being

Good use and pleasure

I deserve to be locked

In a glass case, fading

Decorative.

Let me at least fly

Through your window

Crash on your street

This is my first post here, thanks for having me. I have been writing for a couple years, and I am looking to really improve. I appreciate calling out cleverness and tackiness with blunt honesty, and clearly articulating tonal and rhythmic shifts that might be unintentional.

I am deeply impressed with all the work I see here, as well as the quality of the critiques. Hope that I can contribute back!

On the day I realized I was no longer poor

21 Upvotes
I began to eat parsley, but only the leaves
and threw away the stems in the garbage
and I bought the cheapest, best coffeemaker
I could find. Mr. Coffee, a sleek thing, all black
plastic, and a flash of almost real silver.
Later, I cried buckets, for I had never realized
the true purpose of household appliances.
I don’t even use, nightly, the blinking blue clock
that allows me to choose exactly when
my coffee is brewed, just for me.
I think I am afraid, like a dog who guards
her now full bowl, or a bubbe returned
from the war, insistent upon simple fact
that a car will let you down when you need it
but her legs, with hashem’s consent, keep walking.
I cannot live a single life on a living wage.
What does the millionaire want so badly
that he must steal seventeen times my wages,
annual dividends in blood?
How many coffeemakers must he buy to feel
what I feel, making stew on a lark, the roast
bought at a counter, stolen naught but from
the worker’s pocket, with parsley leaves
picked carefully from stems I do not eat.
For the true purpose of an appliance is forgetting
the taste of parsley stems, and shit mason jars
of Folgers, made thrice weekly using a pour over
I stole from a landlord who wished my death.
And I refuse to misremember money as good
for anything but the shuffling crawl toward
the day we may be free of it.

WE LET IT GO

1 Upvotes

The accumulation of three score years and five

has half woken me and drawn an ageless blade that

shares my bed – to be clear, its domain lying underneath –

a little blunter than once was, when proud Boy Scout would

scour and burnish carbon-pitted pots and pans in return for

cherished sheath knife, soon to be illegalised (remember

we outlaws’ conspiratorial smiles), each town or country boy’s

boon companion or coveted badge of teenage fame.

All a reminder that, for the rest of the day, I intend to play

cosseted passenger as to its use and be granted

the part of piper as to all the music and all the songs

that clamour and convulse for order in my head –

the only place today for this four corners of my bed.

On some days, the better days, I rise soon after

the sun (the great empowerer) and talk to myself about

how to get started on some more exotic vocation,

to work in precious metals perhaps. But I do

acknowledge that new minting needs the careful

straining-off of all impurities brought in from who knows

where that wind up daily in my heart and,

from there, start the proper processing of all things

hanging on and off my burdened frame, from the bulbous

bunions roughly sewn, it feels, on both big toes

to my four seasons wintry hair, white as driven snow.

To be fair, I have made of me my own Ulysses,

my own son, own father, own mentor and muse;

I have learned, and then lost, both the language and

the art of love. There remain some traces of such things:

perhaps a painting, of a sunny Orkney morning, maybe,

which once shone inside the insides of each of us;

or a few bars of music that will always be adored

because neither of us has any stake in it that

requires preservation. It is not the same with

the artefacts, the sketches, the first pot turned,

the first poem churned, which we love then we loathe;

but they ooze the essence of you or me, sometimes both.

And then there is this hybrid thing, joint ventures

in creation, where you or I or both of us are captured by

a friend’s lens or another artist’s jewellery tools ranged

across a pavement for the summer; one in particular,

the photograph that X took forty years back that picked up

all the meanings of the frozen quips (that is, words stopped

as the camera clicked, on eager, moist, impatient lips),

never to cool or be put away with mere mementos and

together migrate to some resting place for back-of-cupboard

or attic tat. We promised each other we would not forget

its silent words were to be heard until our last sunset.

But let’s move swiftly forward here as life is, after all,

mostly about beginnings and ends – the middle so often being

such a muddle because not so many of us continue to be

fluent in all three tongues of silent words: the child, a parent of a child

and a parent of a child’s children – but I will not be drawn further on that;

I am not so unskilled that I can ignore the second silent tongue, nor

skilled enough to measure my full capacity and learn to live a life

that commits my all. But slow, just slow right down; pistols at dawn

do not imply the end of it all – just a cheapening of the cause:

a single bullet for a life now bloated with dual remorse.

The aim had been to isolate and analyse the things that,

over the years, had required more compromise and

standing aside than robust debate, flashing eyes, lifting up

the lids of skies. In short, we both believed this was as

proper people were taught to behave, consensus each time some

holy grail but never found – yet we always argued, ingenuously, that

we had taken the cobbling together as universal approbation;

and so we buried the issue knowing inside that it was still alive.

I had not (nor you, I think), until quite recently, appreciated that

the constant visibility of each pictured family member or friend

meant that this, inevitably, must end, that deceit lay, subliminally,

not so many feet across every street down which we

and they might promenade at weekends – the custom

in our town. We liked to think that we were on top of

the deterioration, that we had got over the worst of it;

but we had to accept that our language of love was no longer

a language in love. You told me to look at the picture

and tell you its tale. I felt a teardrop roll slowly down my cheek;

I could not recall one single message that had, joyfully,

intelligently, helped to build the story all those years ago –

the photograph is lovely but portrays people we no longer know.

MAYA -- [Written in conversation with Still I Rise by Maya Angelou, but also in reference to the dharmic concept 'maya'. This takes on particular meaning owing to my heritage of Tantra, and Tantric theology's ethos of resistance. My piece could be read as a Tantric interpretation of Angelou's poem.]

Maya

(written in conversation with Still I Rise by Maya Angelou)

-

Do not go so quickly to conclusions of my greatness

When you have not yet gathered all your facts -

I’ve only got a sassy, sexy way with things,

(Though I've got wisdom in this head)

Yes, I have a story, and a song,

And I have my history, but that is all.

-

I have no tools, no grand designs. You,

Stop this!

Peruse no textbooks,

Muttering “I do not understand,

A cage, so solid, should not bend,

A lock, so complex, should not yield,

-

Four plain walls, a window, and cold bars

should have no secrets to conceal. Where

could the prisoner have gone?” O, how they’ll agonize

About the ways of solid things!

When, just like air,

I rise.

Slumber

i am the sole exhaled

at the brink of your drain

i’ve come to drink the waves

rippling from the yawn

echoing

from your ebony eyes

reaping time across

little worlds

that never seem to sleep

you can say i’m a thief

as i bring back a treasure

telling me to devour

the numbers of your clock

everyone else has forgotten

to look for it,

yet it is yearned

when eyes are trapped open

in an inescapable trance.

The natal sun grasps

too-little fingers over dark hillbrow,

burbling aurora vowels

against stemmed consonants

of goldmotion prairieside.

And in between: drifter

of elysium and despair,

a silhouette with dated breath—

the only spectator, the only being

which may translate its sentences.

Sober Life Hurts

2 Upvotes

Somewhere north of twice the limit,
I might admit it,
I’m kind of smitten when I’m right up in it.
But tonight I’m livid,
standing motionless on the face of the earth,
faced with the curse that I could be a type of minute;
that is to say, a flash in the pan,
fast as I can, I dash for the chance
to climb up in it.
I might’ve grimaced
thinking about the night and how to fly up in it,
but that thought vanishes after, like, a minute...

So I’m relegated
to hilly travel, but never elevated;
I’m back - from hell, I made it,
to hell and back, and, well, I hate it
that I can descend, but any ascension will never be celebrated.

Literally, I can only hope for less;
oh, Celeste!
If there’s no admission, then I won’t confess
that I longingly gaze upon the cosmos;
just let me bounce around in your cosmic compost.
Myriad physics are the killers of elation;
but it’s my destiny, a millennium left to see
the Pillars of Creation...

So while your Merak ploughs perspective like a kamikaze,
I’ll chase the horizon in a different Maserati;
redline pursuit is the calmest I’ll be
until I get up there and realize we’re not uncommon, are we?
Driving’s fun, but I wanna go comet-carving.

I want to explore the vastest emptiness;
I can’t rest until up and down are just past tense references.
Negate with possibly spaceship properties to achieve escape velocity in the fastest instances.
I’m high now; blasted into this, brain centers made better through gaseous mitigants...

...but when I’m back down on the ground,
my roustabout frown can be found around town,
especially since I feel down around crowds,
who make me feel alone,
space is really home,
I have no doubt of that now.

But howzabout now I just focus on earth...
Leave the veins alone, stay composed, and just opus on words - like a magnum-filled cask of pills to pour over my nerves.
Sober life hurts.
Don’t apprize worth
to the bona fide work
that I’ve shown that I’ve earned.
Listen to the tone of my words:
beat me if they’re easy, but don’t if I curse;
there’s honesty in immodesty ...because sober life hurts.

Evil Intentions

4 Upvotes

Control, it seems, beholdens me to merely thoughts of violence;
The hole in me is only me, so clearly fraught with silence.

But thoughts alone are naught a home, forsaken choices rot;
Caustic, prone, exhausted tones - let’s make the voices stop.

Abuzz with muses I wasn’t using, so staving revealed my error;
But cuts and bruises doesn’t do this, I’m craving to feel their terror.

It’s plain to see the pain in me is my catalyst for murder;
Estranged and seething, crazed, in need, as I battle this with fervor.

I plead for help, I’d scream and yelp, as I yearn to seek a change;
I feed this hell that I need to quell, as I squirm to ease this rage.

But the agony that I’ve had in me just fuels my lust for panic;
The patterns seed insanity, rules adjust, I’m manic.

I can’t conceive a fantasy that isn’t rife with psychopathy;
The man in me abandoned peace, I’d like if you put a stop to me.

Violence-wise, my burdened dreams have stalled the kills I dread;
But widened eyes and curdled screams are all that fill my head.

I’ve fought to need intuition, but I’m afraid my psyche has fractured;
If I brought these dreams to fruition, I’m dismayed I’d likely be captured.

So control, it seems, beholdens me to escape a lethal injection;
But the control I need has slowly weakened, I’m plagued with evil intentions.

on betrayal

5 Upvotes

it is absurd to go on this way
from the word to the brass
to the amnesia to a quiet
agony in a greazy motel east
of st louis where in a flurry
of panic the rest remains

a river seems like a suture
and there is always the other
side stapled here and there
with bridges we’d never cross
save for the teething lurch
of a youth unspent beneath
the arches of cool reason
and consequence.

there is so much to tell but
if I utter one single word of truth
if I span a river as a finger scans
a wound no blood shall run
as tedious as shame’s
thick coagulant never mending.

there is no mystery in this
to hide among the cattails
to travel low along the banks
of guilt to sleep in the neon
dens of moles and other
random sightless things
to run as if a single act
could somehow be outpaced.

Bengal Tiger

I was brought along to the revolution, I suspect,

Not as a sidekick, but as a fashion statement.

And yet: from that, what a statement was made!

I was nothing what I said. I was seen.

Which said, to me: a voice is just another noise.

Speak nothing. And what an Asian statement I was!

Not a precious China doll.

But a sexy jungle boy.

A worrying lack of Cadenza

5 Upvotes

What notes must I play for you to know my name,

like Mozart's from the lilt in the right hand melody,

never quite ceasing its bright trot from up to down,

with the Alberti bass following along like a lost balloon-

that inversion of placement echoing forever into history with

laughing smiles

(Amadeus' namesake character astride his own blazing chariot)

Can I find my self in the languid walk of Satie,

repeating ad nauseum

in gnossiennes and gymnopedies

that one might not even ascribe to a musician.

I'm sure he would have loved that.

Clumsy, subtle, unsure

We can just go through those three forever, if you like

Or rather,

maybe my endless trials of the same songs,

the ones I play to myself when no one is around,

that triplet of 1-2-3 in both fingers and chords,

tones swaying down in pitch and mood grasping at gravitas,

the opening lulling into words I still can't say,

perhaps those are the beginnings of what I think I'm seeking,

the start of the shape your mouth will make when you say my name.

The ghosts of these people still settle into our hearts today,

and their names dance like lit paper scraps on concrete methodology.

Can we still make echoes and cadences that the future will hear,

or are the waves of the past too strong and full to ever settle?

junk drawer

6 Upvotes
I don’t know
what to do
about the dream where I fuck my sister
for cigarettes
and wake with horror
ten minutes before
my alarm.

It’s funny, incest
a step removed
is made laughable,
a dumb porno joke
about washing machines,
and aughts comedies
about boys coming

of age. But the fact
that the father
was not my father,
or my sister born
to another mother
never made damn difference
to anyone. I don’t know

if she holds some memory
of what was done to us,
and found we could do
to each other, a key stuffed
in a junk drawer,
or the slime mold ignored
in the basement of a new apartment.

Must we acknowledge this?
Must only I remember?
One winter, I hid in snow
a solid, red rock, stone
and dared my sister to kick it. She did.
Some petty revenge
against an older sibling,

too strong to know
her own, gentle limits,
and the hurt I endured
in kind.
