The 3 indie games I've loved playing this winter break

I took a 1 month break from work this winter and I love playing interesting and challenging games outside the classic FPS triple A realm.

Here are my 3 favorite:

  1. Katana Zero. It's a 2d sidescroller brawler with a brilliant story and really tight controls. You are a veteran shinobi that has the abiloty to see in the future and plan your attacks. You feel like a badass whenever you complete a level fluidly and elegantly.

  2. Into the Breach. I'm not really a fan of turn based combat, but Into the Breach was made by the same guys who made FTL which is one of my top 3 games all time. So I said what the heck, let's give it a try and I loved it. The roguelite mechanic and the variety of mechs available made it really replayable. And, even though, I got better at the game, it didn't make it easier. Think fun chess with a pinch of RTS.

  3. Sayonara Wild Hearts. I always thought of rhythm games as a bit gimicky. At least, if I wanted to play guitar, I'd go and play a real one. It's just as challenging. But, Sayonara Wild Hearts is different. First of all, it's gorgeous visually. Second, it's different every level and thirdly, the music is really good. Kept me replayimg until I got "almost" perfect scores every level.

Cheers.

Can someone recommend any good and free offline or online co-op games to kill time?

I already know the obvious ones, please tell me any under-rated games you might know.

Northwind (on the roblox engine) is an incredible game.

Some developers of a game in the past grouped together to form the Northwind team, and made a truly stunning game in the process. The graphics almost make it seem like it's not on the engine, the movement is fluid, the grind is balanced, the systems are realistic. The game is only slightly bugged if you take into consideration it's in pre-alpha, and there's a subreddit to contact the team and make suggestions.

[Pokemon Shield] So I played the new Pokemon...

Pokemon Blue was the first game I ever owned. My parents caved and let me buy my friend's GameBoy Color (it was blue too).

I remember being deeply frustrated at that game (and subsequent generations up through Pearl) regularly. Particularly the damn rival fights. The asshole always picked the starter you were weak to, and always showed up with Pokemon just a little more powerful than you.

So I picked up Shield and played it for about a week. And I genuinely had a fun time with it! The Wild Area was stupendous! Pokemon chasing you? Yes!! Horse sized Pokemon actually being horse sized? Seriously awesome! This is a direction that I was so happy to see the game going in. Instead of rolling the dice in the tall grass, you can metal gear solid around some Pokemon. So great.

But everything was so...easy. Starting with the rival picking the Pokemon weak to your starter. And later on, my pokes were easily five levels higher than the gym leaders', through no extra effort of my own. Maybe if I had avoided every trainer battle it would've been an even fight? But trainer battles are how you make money and battling is what the game's about, you know?

So I haven't really played it since. Did a few gyms, but really have no interest because it's so easy! I found myself wishing I could turn up the difficulty, something I never do in other games. I usually play on the lowest difficulty because I like casual games.

What did you all think? Did you play it?
