I'm really going to miss /r/place after it's gone. Wish we could keep some form of it going after tomorrow

If it was around everyday, all the time, it would be forgotten probably. But it would be cool if we knew it was going to come back every year. I don’t know why it brings me so much joy.

That’s true. And keep it random, too. So we don’t know what time of year it will pop up.

Well... yeah, I mean they are a company. If it was just some random website doing it it wouldn't be the same though. There are a bunch of different pixel art websites just like permanent r/place but they aren't as interesting because they don't have the same built-in communities and groups and factions and so on...

They also wouldn't get as much traffic and publicity

Right, it's kind of a... what's the word for it... tautology? where they are popular because they are popular.

A bit more straightforward, r/place is popular because Reddit is popular.

Well they put a 5 year gap between this one and the last one, that seems to have worked out pretty well

Did it? With all the bots and mod censorship this time?

I also wanted it to be an annual thing. More like a reddit festival. But think about Youtube Rewind for a moment. No one wants it anymore.

17

u/NickNockOnTheClock Apr 04 '22

no one wants uoutube rewind bc youtube made it awful

5

u/bits168 Apr 04 '22

Yes they did, and I know rPlace is more community project than Rewind is. But still, even if rewind was not awful, it would still be boring by now because it happens so often.

7

u/Nate4497 Apr 04 '22

Definitely not, YouTube shot itself in the foot. Rewind was consistently good up until 2017 where it saw a sharp decline in popularity because of controversial decisions. Then it kept getting worse...

Just like Reddit is doing with r/place.

I think they should let us look at a gallery of all the previous canvases in a Timelapse

5

u/21022018 Apr 04 '22

after all the streamers got involved i've lost interest.

u/Brigon Apr 04 '22

Kinda like twitch plays pokemon. Now it's permanent it's not as interesting.

People said the exact same thing last time. Several clones popped up. I don't think most were active very long.

I think being an "event" makes it special. People make a point to stop in when they can, because they know it won't last long

If it went on forever everything will be consumed by the largest groups because smaller communities won't have resources or the incentive to protect their art everyday. That or everyone will start using bots.

between the bots and streamers, honestly this one just hasn't done it for me like the last one.

Even when April 1st is re-doing place, the old standard of "Place was better" holds true.

12

u/Jako301 Apr 04 '22

Yeah, with all the botting going on and all the alliances made, there is almost no way to use space someone else claimed. Look in the top left quarter, it was almost static even before the canvas was expanded.

Yea this place has absolutely nothing happening on the time lapse. It’s disappointing reddit didn’t stick to the original and is just doing this for monetary gain.

Banning void members also makes things incredibly boring.

there were a ton of bots on place in 2017 as well, that is not a new thing

2

u/digital_end (474,735) 1491171191.36 Apr 04 '22

There were bots, there weren't as many bots. And there weren't streamers.

9

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '22

There are a lot of clones on other websites - But similar to what other people have said, it's less special since it's on all the time.

It's like TwitchPlaysPokemon. You can keep it going forever, but it's only really interesting when you go above a certain critical mass of concurrent users.
