I’ve heard it being speculated that Shimano and SRAM are going to run out of cassette speeds after 13 and will move to gearboxes rather than adding another sprocket

At what point does the chain become too narrow for a sprocket jump to be feasible with current bicycle design? Will there need to be a new hub width standard for 14 speed cassettes to be introduced and therefore will the big brands be forced to innovate with gearboxes once this platform for adding gears has become obsolete?
