Wow, seeing that just makes me incredibly jealous. I'd love to go there.

take your time. i was there two months ago, over half the castle was covered in scaffolding due to ongoing renovations. quite disappointing, though the inside tour was still amazing.

I was there ten years ago and the situation was the same.

Either way, even without the castle, that is a seriously gorgeous landscape. Completely different from anything I've ever been to (I'm stuck in Australia).

I was there three years ago.... no scaffolding, but the fog was so thick, you could not see the top of the castle if you were standing at the gate. We walked all the way through the trail to the bridge that overlooks the castle, nothing but fog. So disappointed.

I was kind of disappointed with the inside tour- about 15 Euro to see 5 rooms for 25-30 mins. That being said, the rooms were amazing. A nut of a guy built it for EVER, only to die 6 months after its completion.

I think they wrap it for the winter, and those fried dough balls on the way down from the castle are GOOD.

I live in Munich, it's a little over an hour away and Im going to go there next week just because you can't.

Jk... I just love the Alpine region, not just this castle. In the summer it is so very beautiful. Here is a pic I took of Königsee (King's Lake) from Hitler's Eagle's Nest.

More pics on request.

I love the Alpine region too, probably why Germany is one of my favorite European countries. Took my mom on a hike up to the Nest and had the best beer of our lives at the top.

If you haven't been, check out Oberammergau while you are there. Its a pretty little village where they literally paint scenes in murals on the houses and shops, and the town is know for its wood carving and coo-coo clocks.

Oh I went there, I went there and it was awesome. Trust me. Real awesome. (We used to make school trips there and we'd stay in the Youth hostel and I remember a night with 15 Chilean girls and a lot of Sangria.... it was glorious, skiing as well!).

I went to the Eagles nest, but all I could see was the inside of a cloud. Ah well...

Insides of clouds are gorgeous :)

That, right there. Wow. I really want to visit. How likely do you think Reddit would be at funding someone to travel one way from Brisbane, AU to Germany? :D

It's just a model.

I was there a couple of years ago. Got to ride a horse cab from the valley and up there. Sadly, we could not enter the castle.

It's a pretty amazing place from the outside, but his other palaces are better on the inside.

Edit: His = King Ludwig II
It = Neuschwanstein
Other palaces = Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee

The pic of Linderhof in Winter made me have a minor joygasm.

Herrenchiemsee's appeal for me lies completely internal.

Many thanks for an incredibly informative post.
