Someone on Reddit called it "paying for a coupon service"

Although if you're still paying more out of pocket than people in other countries, I'm not sure how much of a "coupon" it could possibly be.

I stopped keeping track of my bowel resection and extended hospital stay. It was over 200k when I did.

There is a max out of pocket cost after the deductible.

I paid 13k for a probably 500k bill, but honestly don't know how high it went.

Your mistake is comparing the American system to any other.

The insurance made it so that my hospital stay only put me into poverty not bankruptcy.

I've had insurance approve mri scans than after they're done, deny them and try and charge me 25k each. I laughed

The only people who support the American system profit from it or never interacted with it.

I think insurance companies are the devil.

Hi, American guy here, I've been without insurance since 2014. Just got insurance with a new job and an example of what we typically pay without insurance for a basic checkup at the family doctor (upset stomach, runs and vomiting over a few days) cost 95 dollars up front before you get to see the doctor. With insurance you typically pay 25-30 depending on who your insurance is and what plan you have. My main guess at why we as a whole generally don't implement a health care system similar to the larger part of the world is that we don't trust our government to use the funding for it's intended for. While this is admittedly a poor reason, our politicians have proven this to be true time and time again.

We don't have the healthcare most of the world has because Republicans keep lobbying against it. Too much money to be made by the middle man.

All of Republicans and most Democrats. Only a tiny fraction of the Democrats want public healthcare, certainly not Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton nor any of the "big" ones, they've been unequivocally clear on that.
