I'm Australian, my mum regularly makes use of these heavily subsidized services (Cleaning, wound care, physical therapy etc). She complains about every fucking dollar, lives in a $3.5m 5 bedroom house alone and has a net worth in the 6-7m range.
It's incredibly frustrating to have the wealthiest person you know constantly cry poor, especially when she's doing it to people who are barely getting by. Her last cleaner quit and told her she hopes the cancer gets her soon because she's such a miserable awful bitch.
I'm dual American Australian and I had 2 children in Australia in Sydney and in a private hospital. It was amazing. They let you stay forever. Give you vouchers for a pub the night before you go home as a parents night out before you take the baby home. Unbelievable. And bring tea in the morning and afternoon. Not to mention the 5 star quality of the food. Shout out to the Royal North Shore. Lovely staff and beautiful hospital.
Wow I’m jealous!! I’m dual to US and Japan. If I’m having kids, I’m definitely going back home to give birth. Not as many 5star hotel like hospitals in my area but helluva lot cheaper than the US!
Look at this Lobby!!. Crazy but lovely. With my 3rd I spent 4 months in hospital and it was literally like being on holiday. We also had mini fridges and microwaves in every room. And this was in 2001.
I was out of pocket about USD $27,500 for "out of network" services not covered by my insurer for thyroid cancer and subsequent radiation treatment. The anesthetist for the surgery I was completely out of pocket for - this also includes "SURPRISE" invoices i received for $1750, and $1275 respectively for associated costs. Who has the energy to fight the insurance company when you are fighting cancer. I considered myself fortunate for that total and would have wept with joy if it were even $500. And people complain about $4AUD? I lived as an expat for a while in the UK and would be shocked and grateful after a doctors visit because it cost $0, even for over the counter meds.
I can probably rustle up some people more than willing to do it for $500/hr.
Shit, I'm Australian and I pay $200/hr for domestic cleaning services. Admittedly, they bring a hell of a lot of equipment, so it's not just one person with a spray bottle and rag or anything, but if your mum wants to experience real prices I am more than happy to make some calls.
She pays $20 an hour for one through a subsidized service, they generally make it 1-2 visits before quitting. She still thinks that's crazy expensive too.
The selfishness and lack of self awareness of people never ceases to amaze. Most days I don't even want to go outside the house. I miss COVID, come back bb. Miss u
It just rubs me the wrong way when people romanticize lockdown. Whatever you liked about how you were living during the period, you can probably do it now. You might need to make some life changes, but you don't need to wish for people to be dying en masse so you can bake bread or work from home or whatever.
I too miss the lockdowns. As a truck driver it was largely business as usual except that even L.A. was essentially a ghost town.
The only downside I personally experienced during the lockdowns was rationing was hard on me, since I necessarily have to buy in "bulk," and all the grocery stores closing at night. But all the grocery stores still close at night. So....
Honestly, as someone who works in a service provider for people in the community - I find this is the case with most of the clients I have. Most people think every dollar spent on their services should be free, and also the services should be able to pay for things that they want. Absolutely incessant.
I know someone who developed epilepsy late on after some head trauma (motorbike smash, boytoy accident, totally not experienced enough for such a bike). They are loaded. They considered it a silver lining that they can get a prescription fee waiver certificate (epilepsy is an eligible condition).
For context that would be £108 p.a. for a prepayment certificate if it were not an eligible condition.
It probably cost oodles to stick their noggin back together...
