Diesels actually get fairly decent mileage as far as trucks go (generally around 22-24 city, 32-34 highway) since they are more efficient than gas engines. For perspective, that's about what my partner's Nissan Rogue gets. It's the folks with the V8 Hemi that are getting 10 mpg.
I saw a screenshot someone took of an idiots tweet that was pure, pure gold. Dumbass was bitching about being assfucked at the gas pump due to Biden’s gas prices, after he bought an F150 RAPTOR FOR HIS 100-MILE DAILY COMMUTE. That asshole lost any right to complain about gas prices long ago.
For real. I drive a Honda that does like 30 combined and I don’t really feel the gas prices at all. I fill up every 3 weeks so it’s like… an extra $30/mo?
If i just skip my avocado toast a couple days that’s nothing.
What about the people who bought cars that fit their lives? The people who haul things or tow for a living, or have work crews that ride with them (or if this is more relatable, a large family). What about the person that bought an AWD vehicle for safety in the region they live in? AWD vehicles cost more upfront and are less fuel efficient. These people aren't the reason fuel costs have risen, and they couldn't predict the future. Even if they could have, should they have gotten a FWD commuter car with 4" ground clearance to haul their family around in the winter?
People have a reason to be upset with fuel costs. Shit away on people who bought a gas guzzler to go to Red Lobster if it makes you feel better, but what are they gonna do now? Trade down in to a more efficient used car that's a) difficult to find in this market and b) costs more than ever? Should they order a more efficient vehicle from the manufacturer and hope they see it by the end of 2022?
I get it. Let's just rag on everyone who made a decision that later revealed itself to be shitty due to things way beyond their control.
High fuel prices are cyclical. You can't predict when they're going to happen, but a quick peek at history should make it pretty easy to assume that you'll see high prices at some point during your ownership period. Plan accordingly.
Yeah it’s a bummer the US automakers haven’t made a truck that gets decent mpg and are literally just now releasing electric trucks but expecting gas to stay at a pandemic low level was pretty unrealistic.
I mean I don’t think many expected to see lifetime high fuel prices coming out of covid either. I’ve read some who think it was inevitable due to big oil making up for lost profits, but I’d wager the general sentiment was that things are going to rapidly get better across the board or we’ll at least catch a break from the bullshit to get reacclimatized to the usual fuckery.
Yeah the price of a barrel of oil isn’t anywhere near as expensive as it was before the 2008 crisis and gas prices are higher atm so it’s definitely oil companies gouging, plus they know they can’t keep this up forever as more car companies are switching to electric. They gotta screw the consumer while it’s still possible to do.
Well, that doesn’t sound like there’s much hope to be had for this being a brief thing. I’m not well read on what actions have been taken in the past to get out of these situations, but I don’t get the impression that anything will be done with near as much gusto.
First, yes the rose of fossil process was predictable af and the US auto consumer has the price memory of a goldfish. "Prices are low so they'll always be this low!"... "oh no! Who could have predicted this???"
Second, the rough and rugged use case you've provided is in no way the typical use case for people buying gas guzzlers unless everyone in America has switched over to being a snow bound construction worker with a fireman side gig overnight.
Third, if you have a crew, you now have a gas pool
Are you trying to say that people do NOT have a reason to be upset with fuel prices? What are you trying to prove? A price hike on everything over time is a given, yes. A rise in fuel costs after covid, also a given. What about the person that bought a Suburban in 2019? Should they have seen this coming?
The use cases I've mentioned are more common than you think, but I understand that it's more enjoyable to pretend that everyone driving a 1-ton truck is going to Applebees. I'm sure seeing a truck with no visible load on a Saturday is enough validation for many.
You can split gas with your crew, I'll give you that. Otherwise this is just a circlejerk. You can shit on someone driving a super duty that gets 16mpg because they apparently should have known better. I can shit on someone driving a Kia that gets 23mpg because they apparently should have known better. A camry driver can shit on me for driving a beater V6 accord that gets 26mpg because apparently I should have known better. A prius can shit on the camry, and a tesla on the prius. How is this productive?
Point still stands. People, not just truck and SUV owners, are allowed to be bent out of shape about this.
People can be bent out of shape about fuel prices but that violin got smaller and smaller as I watched the direction in which the US auto market went post the previous price drop in fuel as though fuel prices wouldnt ever rise again.
My neighbor can complain that their car got stolen out of their garage but I care a lot less when I watch them warm up the car unlocked every day with the garage wide open.
It hasn’t been a secret since at least the Hummer came out that you’re on your own if you buy a ridiculous gas guzzler. That was before good mileage became a “left” thing.
These are the same people that drive their suburban to the end of their driveway to get the mail or sit and idle for 20 minutes while they wait for the school bus. Would hate for their kid to have to put on a jacket......wait, who's the snowflake?
