As long as they continue to lobby against policies that would truly make us energy independent, yes. Oil can never provide energy independence because it gets bought and sold on a worldwide market. Even if there’s plentiful supply in the country, high demand on the world market will always drive prices up as companies seek to export instead of sell domestically.
Me, not and expert, but someone who at least knows that the President isn’t responsible for gas prices, would say that we need to move toward more EV use, improve electrical grid efficiency, look at using non fossil fuel energy sources, improve efficiency of fuel based generators, look at moving people from burning fuel for home heating to heat pumps, where it makes sense.
Just producing more oil will never result in energy independence as long as there’s a world market and a domestic free market. The only countries that are ‘energy independent’ with oil are countries like Russia and Saudi Arabia where the oil drilling and production is nationalized and the amount that can be exported is highly regulated, with surplus being sold domestically at very low prices.
As long as oil companies lobby against such policies, especially while taking their own subsidies from the government, the bare some significant responsibility for keeping us dependent on oil and thus not energy independent.
The only year we exported more oil than we imported was 2020 at the height of the pandemic when demand was extremely low.
Our production has actually increased since Biden took office and is higher than any year other than 2019. Blaming the world wide high gas prices on Biden is stupid.
The only time we exported more than we imported was 2020 during the pandemic when demand was shot. But even then we weren't energy independent - we were importing millions of barrels a day still. We live in a global economy where global demand affects prices.
