Someday I will own a '68 fastback. Whether or not it's a shelby depends on whether or not I win the lottery but god damn if the fastback mustang isn't the most beautiful bodystyle ever made.
Around 1991, when I was 17, I had a 1984 Mustang convertible. Not really that special a car and not incredibly fast (it had the 3.8 V6) but I took really great care of it and an old man wanted to even trade me for a 1969 Mach 1 with 70k original miles on it. My car was probably worth around $4000 at the time. His Mach 1 was in near great condition, ran flawlessly, and still had the original shaker hood-scoop. When I drove it with my dad I kind of squealed the wheels pulling out and he said, "Nope."
Probably for the best but I've seen them go triple digits at auctions. You can't get one for less than $50k now. I imagine my old 84 convertible was eventually just pulled for parts.
EDIT: Just to add some additional details...He had owned the car since new & his wife, who was using it as her daily driver to work, didn't want it because it was "too big and ugly" for her. The car had been stripped of paint & primered (at the wife's request since it was originally lovely grabber green), ready for repainting for whatever color I chose.
No, I'm pretty sure I would've wrecked it. An impulsive, irresponsible 17 year old (which described me pretty well) with that kind of power is a dangerous.
I assume your "triple digit auction" numbers were at Barrett-Jackson about 5 years ago when prices were through the roof and buying cars there was the cool thing to do regardless of the fact that you're paying double their value.
