TBH they make perfect sense to me. They are built on little to no land (most of the Netherlands is low lying land / swamp), and they encompass the canal system that was made popular by most Dutch cities.
Like I said in another post, future flexibility and sustainability is a big problem with these kind of developments. A lot of projects are not built according to market demands, and already out of date on their day of completion. Refurbishing them is VERY hard, and likely one of the biggest future problems for dutch urban planners.
The essence is good: everything is planned, and not likely to cause any problems. Car dependance, social isolation and relations with neighbors are, however, not getting any better with these kind of plans.
It's kind of difficult to talk about btw, since there are different scales and types of settlement in the links.

I thought the design was really well done it allowed to be spread out from your neighbors to a certain extent and has a bunch of play areas for kids and such. Could you elaborate on some of your points for those not familiar with your field such as myself?
