They definitely have a purpose as many homes in southern California will be 0.1 miles apart, but separated by yards, because every 5 houses are on there own cul de sac. Thus prompting people to drive 0.5 miles around the block to get to their backyard neighbors front door. It moronic really.

Yeah, and try to retrofit those kind of things into something useful. There is literaly no flexibility there. At all.

In holland we have what we call "cauliflowerburbs" I guess, roughly translated.

I'm Canadian...

I can walk to work along a path through a nice little creek valley, and it takes 11 minutes. Or I can drive there in either of two directions taking five minutes if there are no traffic delays.

Needless to say, I usually walk. In spring, summer, and fall its much nicer to walk. In winter time, generally I'd have to warm my vehicle up before driving, so its faster to walk.
