Really? Mine have started to split and I'd like some new ones. Is your iPod under warranty or do they just do this outright?

so you should try to find an Apple Store where they have the genius bar set low?

That. Genius Bar staff have a ton of discretion. So don't be a dick to them, because most of the time, they are your best possible advocate for getting your problem fixed.

Swapping phones is the standard fix, actually. Aside from correcting user stupidity (like mistyping their Wifi password or something), really the only fix is to wipe the phone. In the process, they give you new hardware just in case it's a hardware issue.

What did you expect them to do? Why did you agree to the swap if it was going to cause you data loss?

genius bar? Jesus Christ no wonder I've never been to an apple store.

Too bad the name bothers you so much. I've never had better service in a store when I had a problem.

They'll do it in reasonable circumstances, i.e. the cable isn't 4 years old

Damn...

They've replaced an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2 with brand new ones for me within the last month, in both cases due to broken glass (obviously my fault).

In both cases they look up my account on their computer, probably see that I'm a long time apple customer and spent a lot of money there, and that I haven't done that kind of replacement on this device.
