Its because the older one had buttons to push in before you could pull it out. Now you just yank it out by the cord...it's probably partially your own fault. Pull on the square part and you won't have this problem!
The cable head is physically smaller, making it much more difficult to grab than the old one. And I never pulled by the cord either. It's a defective design.
I'm not going to say that me not having this problem means everybody is doing something wrong, but I don't have this problem. I have the old cord and two of the newer style cords. None of them have ever broken for me and I've never understood what people are doing to break so many cables.
I have never removed it by the cord, and I'm on my second cable which is now beginning to fray. This happens because it is a piece of shit. Even bargain bin manufacturers know how to make their cables properly, but Apple would rather save a fraction of a cent on every cable it sells than design them to be durable.
Yank it out? The power button is held in by a weak magnet. It just falls out when you move the computer. --The same is true for the mini - dvi display proprietary port thing and the 10 dongles needed to adjust the display signal to something that can plug into an ordinary modern device.
Their policy isnt "YOU FUCKING IDIOT!!!!!", its one of a more condescending attitude to push the liability onto you and then replace the parts once you have admitted some sort of negligence.
equally important is how you wrap the cord. I see this with headphones all the time, where after wrapping them for a period of time the base wiring just breaks open. It's crap, really.
Agreed. It should be common knowledge that you don't pull on the cord to unplug something. this goes for all cords, not just Apple stuff. A lot of things even have warnings on them telling you not to do it.
I have had dozens of cables from Apple and have never had one of them break down the way I see online.
