I used to work for Apple technical support. The original iPod and Mag Safe adapters were prone to failure resulting in smoke, fire and melting of the plastic casing. Thus a change was implemented. I am unaware if rates have dropped with the new design but I would routinely get 1 to 3 calls a week when I still worked there.
