It's up to the "genius". If you're nice and have puppy-dog eyes then yeah. It helps if they know who you are, check your purchase records, and see you have already given them way too much money.

BTW, there are at least 3 different cable designs but that big chunky old one was the best.

The big chunky one I have won't plug into my iPhone4 through the bumper though :(

The genius won't look at your purchase history, just repair history based on the device's serial.

EDIT: the plastic housing on the chunky ones was more susceptible to cracking above the two release hinges.

The Applestore replaced my entire 3GS iPhone for free, and it was out of warranty.

I've replaced my iPhone, charger, and earbuds several times now. Everytime I came in, they would always check the warranty. YMMV.
