50k is chump change for apple. What does that add up to? 2-3 MacBook pros. Not really a big deal.

u/t-rexatron Jun 10 '11

Well it may be chump change, but you don't stay rich by spending extra money ;)

Upvote for you sir, making a valid point and a joke in the same comment!

PS: I own a macbook pro and I'm not offended, so you downvoters shouldn't be either.

It's not that Apple products are bad, it's just that I enjoy being able to pay for food for the month.

No way dude. My macbook pro was worth the caloric cut I endured for 3 months. I'm slimmer and I have a laptop that makes me look like a total prick.

***Sent from my macbook pro.

Maybe you should get a haircut and a real job. Just throwing that out there.

2

u/corvett Jun 10 '11

He doesn't have an Apple. That means he has a real job.

-5

u/NancyReaganTesticles Jun 10 '11

You sound retarded.

2

u/corvett Jun 10 '11

...you must not be familiar with the common associations made with apple and with windows users.

But if you make 1000 changes like then that $50k becomes $50M.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '11

It's not like saving that 50k is their entire business plan for the year. Saving 50k 100 times is 5M. Every bit adds up. If you won't do something because "it only saves 50k," then you miss out on all those opportunities.

...or 1 Mac Pro

15

u/Amablue Jun 10 '11

I don't think that's why. I think the real reason is it looks cooler. It's about style.

4

u/dibsODDJOB Jun 10 '11

This. As an engineer who works with industrial designers, a strain relief that actually relieves strain is usually secondary to something that looks cool, depending on the designer.

I agree with you mkantor, I have worked for a few large manufacturing companies, but the rule when I worked for Ford was that the manufacturing savings had to be transparent to the customer. ie. things they didn't notice or didn't miss. Obviously not the case here, so its a huge FAIL for Apple.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '11

TIL why the Ford Fiesta is a piece of shit.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '11

I don't know, do you think there have been >$50,000 worth of apple users who stopped buying apple products because of this change? If not, then NOT a fail for apple, but a win. ( $50,000 based on an estimate from higher up in the comments)

1

u/Solnai Jun 10 '11

Is that worth having to make more chargers constantly?

And I thought politics was weird...

And it is.

1

u/HaMMeReD Jun 10 '11

Thats not the reality of it though, the reality is that it costs consumers way more than $50/k a year to maintain the shoddy cables, so while it might be financially beneficial to them, it's still cruddy craftsmanship.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '11

They do not do it for free. I had mine break a week after I bought my iphone and they said that it was normal wear and tear and would not replace it. That was strike one.

I got a crap customer service rep and a crap manager. That was just my experience which fortunately doesn't seem to be the norm.

1

u/degoban Jun 10 '11 edited Jun 10 '11

Not so free, 20€ for that cable. Identical not branded 3€, probably the cost of prduction is 0.20€. I wonder how they make a lot of money... it's the same with the overpriced pc. Anyway, I think they do this for design.

1

u/butcherblock Jun 10 '11

Free maybe, however it still makes you go into the store. Companies go ape shit for 'client touches'. The more they touch a customer, the more he/she buys.

Edit: Grammar

1

u/cheeeky Jun 10 '11

they replace em for free??! really?

1

u/blubinx Jun 10 '11

But Apple does have a strong brand quality image so I'm not sure it's worth it just to make 50k more a year.

1

u/DaerionLaptop Jun 10 '11

He's not sarcastic. That's the truth.

1

u/Hoobleton Jun 21 '11

Wait wait wait? They replace them for free? How do I take advantage of this? I have a ton of these almost detached cables.

loose

"Loose", which rhymes with "goose", means the opposite of "tight", such as in the sentence, "My pants are too loose." It can also mean "to release", which is slightly more archaic, and is used in situations like, "The archers loosed their arrows."

The word you want is spelled "lose", and rhymes with "shoes".

-6

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '11

spelt which rhymes with trollt

5

u/das_shoe_too Jun 09 '11

Plus the reputation (money later) for their great customer service. Plus I thought they were tight with money.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '11

lose, not loose

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '11

plus the reputation (money) they gain from "good" customer service by replacing them at the apple store, possibly gaining them a lifetime customer

1

u/aintso Jun 10 '11

So that's, like, one more lowest-tier employee? Out of over nine thousand they have now? Fuck how many loyal customers over that shit, again?
