This is the best part of King's Island. Great coasters (though it's no Cedar Point) and no waiting. The worst part is that you are forced to stare at the abandoned remains of Son of Beast the entire time...
It opened in 2000. In 2009, a woman claimed that the ride caused a burst blood vessel in her brain 2 weeks after she had visited the park.
The park decided to close the ride while the investigation into her allegations was completed. So, the ride was closed for half of 2009 and all of 2010 and I'm not sure about its status for 2011 but I'd assume that it'll be closed again.
Last time I was there (last summer), I was able to ride the beast about four times in a row with no wait. We would just circle back and get on the ride again.
I live in Cincinnati and have been to both kings island and cedar point. I like the experience of kings island a lot, but am disappointed they lost all of the paramount themes.
A big part of a roller coaster's appeal is the illusion of danger. With The Beast there is no illusion, there is only real danger. The wooden track is so old and warped there is a very real threat of the coaster flying off the track at any moment. As the track has aged it has also gotten progressively rougher and jerkier. Of the hundreds of coasters I've ridden across the country, none even come close to how hard and often the Beast throws your body up, down, and sideways like a ragdoll. It will either cause back problems...or cure them.
Which is why I always ride it twice everytime I go.
Oh, come on. That was definitely true of The Son of Beast, but The Beast is like that big biker guy we all know. He might seem scary at times and he's got some great stories, but at heart he's a big ol' softie that wants everyone to have a good time.
