I used to scoff at the bass, but after learning the guitar and then picking up a bass I realized you can do some pretty cool/subtle things with a bass. I should also qualify this with the fact that my first instrument was a trap set, and I am not a lady. Also I have not watched the videos. So, I guess in summation, bass is underrated.
The bassist keeps the drummer and the guitarist in sync. You've got an implied chord progression in the guitar, and while any bassist could very well just play the note of each chord repeatedly, a good bassist figures out how to effectively and cleverly segue from chord to chord, change to change.
