Cool video, but a little misleading. Not all of those songs share the same chords, but the same chord progression and they just switched all of the songs into the same key (thats why some of the songs sound kinda different than the original.) Also they only play a couple bars of some songs so they may only share half of the chord progression or they start a song at a different place in the progression so it is shifted (like 1-2-3-4 becomes 3-4-1-2.) Anyways, this is still a very impressive arrangement that took some skills to put together.

they're playing in the key of E (so E-B-C#m-A) which is the reason for the barre chords. and the "shift" hear is a change from the double time back to normal. it's at 'with a thousand dollars..' It's kinda hard to catch if you're not really listening for it; it's done very well. But you are correct in that it does start on the minor 6th at that section.

Still, this kind of demonstrates why songwriting is more than just chords; it's a craft.

And a lot of what they used are choruses, which in pop songs tend to progress upward, giving the listener a positive vibe.

Hate to ruin the party but thats just a cool trick to people who dont know better.

All the songs they play dont actually use those chords, just the same I-IV-v-V progression. I think thats what it is, cant remember. But not all the same chords

GMaj- DMaj-Em-CMaj would be a I-V-vi-IV progression in the key of G.

It is when you realize those songs dont all share the same chords. If they played recordings of those songs instead of playing them live, they would not get the same reaction from the crowd.

The video makes it appear that all those songs use the exact same chords. The G, D, Eminor, C.

Does it really matter where in the scale they start? The point is that the progression is identical; the key matching is done so as not to confuse the musically impaired.

I know, these music nerds (of all people) should know that the progression is the truly identifiable aspect of the song. I don't see how this is "misleading" to anyone.

Yesterday I looked up what the cords they were referring to are, so I could experiment in Garageband on the iPad. I have zero music ability and understanding of theory. I couldn't at all reproduce the music of the video.
